JAZZ: Jazz Fusion, ROCK: Instrumental Rock

Details:
Mach Disc Sighting is a Baltimore-area group performing a mix of progressive rock, psych-fusion, and an occasional ''jam''. The group consists of Dan Zacharko, guitar, bass, synth, & compositions and Luis Ruck, drums & percussion. There''s tons of melody throughout along with interesting chord progressions, tasteful dissonance, and epic type songs. Lot''s of theme changes, tension and release, time changes, a story at every turn.

This is the type of music that works well on several levels. If the listener wants to really have an intense listening session, there are always plenty of new things to pick up on with repeated listenings. The laid back feel of the music is also great for late night listening. The music has a feel to it that listeners always seem to hear some ''blast from their past'' yet Mach Disc Sighting ultimately has their very own sound.

Dan Zacharko''s style of guitar playing is very emotional. He likes to pull all he can from a single note. There''s plenty to hear in his approach to playing guitar. The listener is bound to get caught up in his style. He prefers to take the different path when soloing. You will expect one thing, then he will attack with a mode that is completely unexpected, yet fits the continuum perfectly. You can expect to hear some playing reminicent of such players like David Gilmour, Steve Howe, Andy Latimer or Steve Wilson. The key word here is reminicent, because Dan has his very own signature. Very original and unmistakable.

Luis Ruck provides the perfect accompaniment to Dan''s playing. Never overbearing, never boring. He plays a solid beat where needed and isn''t afraid to stretch out and do something different to add to the compositions. He is particularly vibrant on the cymbals, making moves that at times are physics defying.

Dan''s comments: "For years I would listen to songs like Ice by Camel or an intense, emotional lead from David Gilmour, such as the one on Comfortably Numb, and I''d think, ''Why not a whole album with music just like that?'' When I composed the music for Taurant, that notion became secondary as the songs free flowed from my subconciousness. In the end though, that initial idea resinates thoughout because that is what I feel inside. Conveying emotion through music is the goal. Peter Banks was spot on when he said, ''The right notes are no good without the soul behind it all''. On Taurant, I bare my soul. It''s there everytime I press string to fret. I hope it conveys as well as it felt while I played it."

Some recent reviews about Taurant:

Music Monthly: "Mach Disc Sighting has created a great piece of instrumental progressive music. They are notable because they are complex and expressive, challenging the listener to expand their own definition of music. The songs reflect a jazz influence as much as any singular rock band. Zacharko, Ruck and company have put together a gorgeous and sparse collection and I recommend it to anyone interested in music that pushes the creative envelope."

Progression Magazine: "Mach Disc Sighting performs a sprawling brand of smokey, throwback psych-fusion that is equal turns melodic, dissonant and sparsely atmospheric.
They evoke the jamming sensibilities of Carlos Santana or early Pink Floyd."

Proggnosis: "Mach Disc Sighting offers some laidback instrumental progressive - fusion. The main feature in the music is the guitar playing of Dan Zacharko. He mostly plays in a slightly distorted emotional manner reminding me of the style of Landberk''s Reine Fiske. If you enjoy instrumental prog-fusion played in a relaxed laidback manner, you won''t go wrong with Taurant. Recommended. "
