Details:
A performer since he was old enough to count, it was obvious Nic Nice had the talent to become one of hip-hop’s greatest entertainers. Ultimately, it will be that special “it” quality and confidence about him that will make him a hip-hop legend.

Born in Brooklyn, but raised in the South, Nic’s delivery exudes a blend of northern exposure and southern hospitality. His candor, wittiness, and down to earth nature reflect in his music as it is refreshingly deliberate, responsible and fun. “What I like most about Nic is that he stays true to who he is and doesn’t try to be someone he’s not”, says Mike Levine, co-producer on Nic’s latest release, In The Nic Of Time: The Prelude.

It was no coincidence that Nic’s debut EP, In The Nic Of Time: The Prelude, was released on the 4th of July. The son of two entrepreneurs, Nic learned early on the importance of independence and building his own business. So in 2004, he started his own entertainment company, Urb Entertainment. His goal was to create music and provide services that would help to redefine urban music and entertainment. It was then that Nic began working on his opus. “First, I wanted to build the foundation and then I wanted to come out with an EP that would give people a taste of what’s to come, hence ‘The Prelude’. I’m currently working on completing In The Nic Of Time: The Album and look forward to getting my music out there”, Nic offered during a recent interview. When he’s not performing, hustling, or networking, Nic’s in the studio working on his music. “I know I got a lot to offer, but it takes work to build on your craft. I just want to be the best artist that I can be.”

While things may seem like they’re finally starting to happen for Nic Nice, it has been a long road just to get to this point. It wasn’t easy growing up poor and often ridiculed. “We were really poor growing up, especially when my parents spilt up. I mean we had to buy our school clothes from the Goodwill or local thrift shop and being embarrassed by it. I remember going to school being scared somebody would recognize their shirt or something. I tried not to let it bother me. I figured one day I’d blow up and then nobody could say anything to me”. Nic somehow maintained that quiet confidence and it helped him through hard times and bad experiences. “I just figured it had to get better and through hard work and god’s will, it did.” His resiliency and determination allowed him to defy the odds that many of his peers faced.

“Going to college was when things really changed for me. I was older and had chance to start over. Plus I was hustling on the financial aid tip, so it gave me money I never had before”, Nic says with laugh. Though Nic showed signs of greatness early on, it wasn’t until college that he had a chance to develop his talent. “I remember hosting my own campus TV show my sophomore year, just trying to get out there. Then I started doing talent shows and got involved on campus.” He would eventually pledge Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., which gave him the platform and opportunity to let his personality and talent shine. Under the bright campus lights of Greek life, Nic blossomed as he would go on to opened for celebrity acts at concerts, act in plays, host events and television shows. “I remember when Nic had Nic Week 2000. It was a week of events that Nic was having for the community. People thought he was wild for trying to do something like that. Mostly Greek organizations would weeks like that. Not too many people could’ve pulled that off, but he did. That’s one thing about Nic, when he puts his mind to it, you can’t tell him anything”, recalls Dr. Jean Accius II, one of Nic’s frat brothers.

After graduating and working for a few years, Nic moved to New York to pursue his musical aspirations. Without having any contacts, friends, or family members, Nic leapt on faith when he moved in 2003. Having only the money that he saved, he arrived in Brooklyn on an early September morning, back for the first time. “It was hard that first night. It wasn’t until I got here and realized that I didn’t know anybody that it hit me. The next morning I got up and starting grinding it out. I had to get acclimated to my new environment and once I started getting out there, things became easier”, he recalls. “When I look back I realized how far I’ve come. And while I think you have to stop and appreciate that along the way, I know I got a long way to go. I learned at an early age, that you got to plan, stick to the plan, adjust when necessary and take things one step at a time.” Which is why now, with the release of his debut EP, he’s primed and ready to make his presence felt in today’s hip-hop.

“For a long time hip-hop fans have waited for someone to come along and remind them of the golden days of hip-hop. When the music had something say, had a message, and you still had fun with it. And I feel like that someone is me”, Nic says with that same quiet confidence he’s know his whole life. With the stale state of today’s hip-hop, the emergence of Nic Nice comes “In The Nic Of Time”. Nic Nice is sure to challenge the status quo with a unique mix of old school sensibilities with a new school sound and swagger.
