Heavily praised in the indie press and an instant college radio favorite, the debut four song EP from Brooklyn''s NEW ELECTRIC finds members of seminal New York punk/hardcore group DE LA HOYA and current indie sweethearts NAKATOMI PLAZA covering their tracks and exploring new territories of ethereal and epic instrumental rock, often tainted with hints of psychedelic and prog influences.
New Electric''s self-titled debut was recorded in October 2004 by engineer Josh Clark at the Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn, NY, home to past recordings by BLACK DICE, RADIO 4, Kele Okereke of BLOC PARTY, and THE BROUGHT LOW among many others. Mastering was handled by the mighty Alan Douches at West Westside (MASTADON, TED LEO, LIARS, etc).

"Four songs grace this twenty-minute EP, spanning the gap between the post rock Mogwai laid down on Young Team and the guitar rock bands like Navies are bringing back. It?s full of energy and (something almost completely lacking from the genre thus far) fun. They?re head bobbing tracks that have strong melodic hooks and real emotion behind them.
Basically, look at it this way. At their shows, instead of everyone holding fast to the typical post-rock-show-stance (ie head down, hands either in pockets or folded across chest, slight rocking back and forth much like a drunk/mad person), people would be jumping around pumping fists in the air and smiling.
Besides the entire EP being a kick ass ride, the closing track, ''Circus Metal'', is really close to being considered my jam for the summer. It busts in with a dark, sinister off-time riff (hello, Jesus Lizard) and barrels through until the wheels come off and it crashes into a foggy corner of lingering feedback and broken melodies. I?m telling you, it''s this close to earning that title straight away (although I couldn''t tell you what other tracks it was competing against).

"These guys are smart, exceedingly talented, and, what sets them apart, not at all flashy. They have the technical skills to out-rock the majority of rock outfits out there. And they''ve sure as hell read more than a few books on music. But they won''t take a chunk out of their song to let their guitarists do some Page-rivaling, sickeningly cocky solo. They could be making jazz compositions or scoring films or doing something really sophisticated, but instead they''re unleashing their skills through no-holds-barred rock and I couldn?t be happier about it.
