Steve Osheyack’s songs are forged in the harrowing depths of his heart and then dragged through the crowded streets and town square for all to see. They are crisp remnants of the life he has lived and the lives of others he has witnessed along the way. They are simple, songs of love, brotherhood, fear, pride and eternal hope. There is something universal in his music and an honesty within his lyrics that makes you lean in to hear each word. “This guy is connected to something” is what he has heard people whisper, when they didn’t think he was listening, but he’ll be the first to tell you that he knows nothing more than anyone else. The only thing Osheyack knows is that writing music is what he was supposed to do, but somewhere in his youth, he let self-doubt in the door to his soul and right then, it put a padlock on his destiny for this life. Sadly, Osheyack put his dream aside, but like most people who have a specific purpose, the road he was on kept bringing him right back to the front gate and beckoning him to step through and little by little he did so. And once he was through the gate, there was no turning back as he found the strength to put his insecurities in their proper place. The songs in the Count Me In collection were written when he first stepped through the door of his destiny and if you listen very closely, you can actually hear his unbridled freedom explode as the gates crashed open in front of him. What follows is Osheyack’s motivation behind each of the songs in this particular collection.
1. Count Me In - This song is about friendship and loyalty in the face of life’s worst shots. I have just a handful of close friends in this world and this song was my way of expressing the high value I place upon these important relationships. I suppose this song, in some way, also expressed my connection with the human race…but without the race.
2. Turn Around Jump Shot Blues - In basketball, the turnaround jump shot is a skill that has a great deal of faith surrounding the fact that one can not see the hoop when making the commitment to the shot. This song says it all with the line, “I want the real life, don’t need no dull knife…I’ve got the turnaround jump shot blues!” In other words, I’m not interested in putting on a big show, I just want to get down to real living, because you never know when the plug is getting pulled.
3. Knight’s Arrival - I wish I could say I was the perfect husband, but I can’t. However, I know that I have tried to right the wrongs when they became painfully evident and I know that my heart has always been in my Wife’s hands. This song was written in a time of self-reflection about how I needed to be a better husband and was an apology and a promise to do better - all rolled into one.
4. Desire Road - Desire Road is a song that expresses my struggle to find the path that would lead me to my personal promised land. Its’ a song about discovering the purpose in one’s life and how difficult it can be to stay focused amongst all the distractions of life.
5. Find the Time For The Children - As the world has become digitally connected and technology has defined our culture, it appears that we have willingly sacrificed the core values of family and turned the role of raising our children over to computers and cable TV. This song is a call to action to reverse this trend and return Sheriff Andy Taylor, and Beaver’s Dad to their rightful place of honor in the American family.
6. Hard Steel - It must be an incredibly difficult experience to know that your marriage is coming to an end and have your children’s lives hanging in the balance. The reality is that no one gets married, thinking that their marriage will crash. I was watching a friend of mine deal with the difficult decisions leading up to his divorce and this song represents the sadness I saw reflected in his eyes.
7. Shackles of The Past - This will always be my favorite song, because it is the first song I ever recorded and felt good about the sound quality. It was a song I wrote that chronicled the process of freeing myself from the past and not allowing it to have any more control over my present. In short, this song was my effort to share the joy of “moving above the clouds” with the world. I can’t say that I haven’t “dipped beneath the clouds” from time to time, but I now know where the horizon lies.
8. Solid Wall of Fear - A good friend of mine was going through an extremely difficult time in his life. He was searching for some pretty basic answers to what life is all about and searching in a lot of questionable places. This song is along the same lines as “Count Me In“, but with a darker image.
9. Stand Our Ground - This is a song about the hard work that goes into making a long term relationship successful. Its’ a hard journey from time to time and there is heartache, pain, joy and mostly love along the way if you’re tough enough to go the distance.
10. Stealth - I was tired and there were too many people asking way too much of me and they didn’t seem to care that I was all used up. I turned away from the noise, closed off the world and wrote this song.
11. Strip Me Down - I was watching TV and the news channel reported a funeral for a well-known celebrity. A little while later, this same news channel carried an ad for a local funeral home, which got me thinking about my own demise and consequently this song describing my last wishes.
12. Hard Knock Slide - I used to know this guy who was the proverbial bachelor. He spent all his time chasing women and then hating them afterwards and I kind of felt sad for him, because it seemed pretty obvious what kind of life he was destined to live, unless he gave up the “hard knock slide.”
13. Take A Good Look Around - I was watching my kids play one day and I tried to picture what they looked like as babies…and it struck me that I couldn’t. It sort of followed in the footsteps of an earlier song I wrote called, “Blink of an Eye”, from a slightly different vantage point.
14. Spin In Your Dirt - I’ve had several jobs through-out my life. This song was written as I was leaving one of them, underappreciated and a little pissed off.
15. Back Into One - The closing song for this collection. It ties it all together with the following chorus, “Connections is the key to find the road, back into one.”
