Details:
It was a Saturday night at Chico’s. Our first set was about to end when Alex Rockwell Jacobs finished his guitar solo with a huge crescendo by sliding the neck of his guitar up against a steel post that was in front of the stage. The crowd loved it. Tim Nielsen from Drivin N Cryin was in the audience. He later invited Alex to Atlanta to introduce him to some people there. That led to Alex playing guitar for country music singer Keni Thomas, doing some Disney/Touchstone recording work and being cast in the movie Sweet Home Alabama (Guess which tune he played?). Before moving north, Alex also did a prime time gig on the ABC series “The Mole.”
I was in Philly by this point. Motivated by my little brother’s success in Atlanta, I dragged myself out to the Philadelphonic jam session at The Khyber and found a ton of great musicians. I played in two bands, the alt-rock combo Sugarsmack Daddy and a keyboard driven band called Dr. Ketchup. Then I met the talented singer/songwriter Phil Roy, who has written for Ray Charles, Joe Cocker & Los Lonely Boys. I played bass for Phil for several years and on “Day to Day Thing” on his 2008 Decca Records release The Great Longing.
John Michael Sakoian and I became friends while attending architecture school together. He walked up one day during a presentation and said, "You''ve been around a bit, huh?" I took that as a compliment. I came across his myspace page and realized that I knew this guy from school. John has a great voice that is unique, sincere and evokes a "that reminds me of someone" feeling.
John came from Pittsburgh by way of Northern California where he produced live sound and lighting for artists such as Karl Denson, John Scofield and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. He also had his own electric jam band that included various guest artists, from Blue Grass Musicians to Dance Rave DJs. In addition to his vocal chops, John is a guitarist and a trumpet player who has a wide range of influences from Rock and Country to Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis.
Alex, John and I recorded our CD with the help of many talented musicians from Philadelphia. Our chief guru was Tom Spiker (Martin, Medeski & Wood, G. Love), who recorded and mixed all the tracks. Fred Berman (Amos Lee) helped us out on drums and John Lilley (The Hooters) dropped in for some mandolin and electric guitar.
Be sure to give it a listen!
