It’s time to let go of that baggage you’ve been hauling around, whether it’s a carryon or the emotional variety. You won’t need to pack for this trip. In fact, the surprising Rising Regina will provide everything you need – upbeat, percussive melodies, perfectly synched three part harmonies, dynamic song structure – with a little bit of musical theatre thrown in.
With their full-length debut release, “Travel Lightly”, you can expect their popularity and acclaim to take off. Anchored by the superb vocal harmonies of sisters Kiki and Jessie Young and lead guitarist/mandolin player Rich Kulbacki, their sound takes on the depth of the third dimension. Add the talents of double bassist David Traugh and percussionist Kevin Bowser and you’ve got a head-turning, jaw-dropping sound, unmatched by anyone, local or national.
More than a band, they are a vocal group, and every song is performed with precision and care. The lead-off track “Whiskey” warms you all the way through with its danceable, gypsy-like beat, setting the tone for the impending journey.

“This Road”, the second track, has a Celtic quality, and feels like a ribbon of highway with it slow and fast turns. A more traditional folk song, “The Boxcar Killer” evokes the rhythm of the rails, and gets the audience involved in its drama. After the sweet and serious “Looking Glass”, the music takes a comic twist on “Sheets”, a song that showcases Kiki Young’s bluesy growl and humorously exemplifies the need to “travel lightly”.
Back on “The Road Less Traveled”, a Patty Griffin style tune built by the conjoined heartbeats of mandolin, bass and percussion, the singer’s lament becomes a prayer.
“To be free is not just a want, but a need.
I don’t know where I’m trying to go.
…Cause my days are slowly fadin’ away
I need faith, oh Lord, this I pray”
Rich Kulbacki’s lead guitar shines on the break-out single, “Happy Now” (track # 7), a catchy tune with a bitter edge that will resonate with many. Jessie Young’s sweet soprano takes the lead on “Wildflower”, a lovely song that calls to mind early Joni Mitchell or Nickelcreek.
We travel back to traditional folk on “Another Day” followed by “Train to Anywhere”. With its alternating tempos, you can see the train pulling slowly away from the station and speeding up again, away from the lover left behind. The final track, “Rock My World”, features Rich and Kiki in a conversational rock duet. A bit of a departure in style from the rest of the album, the song illustrates the diverse talents of this amazing band.
“Travel Lightly” is a strong debut from an accomplished band that is truly on its way.
About the Title
Kiki Young, whose original artwork graces the album, reports, “We all agreed it should have something to do with
traveling... or life paths... simply due to the content of the album. It was when we were packing for the trip to West Virginia to record the first time. Jess says to all of us... "we have limited space, so travel lightly!" We knew right then that was the title. And frankly, as soon as she said it and all was decided, I saw the picture of the bird in my head. It seemed simple, yet bright... kind of like us…”
