Tender caring person with a big ol'' bag of deep- rooted troubles stuffed down into one of his pockets. Blaze could cut right through the bullshit, or he could be the cause of it. The funniest person I ever met, and also the most tragic.
Blaze introduced himself to me in a bar one night back in 1976, and we hit it off. He invited me to his first gig in Austin. It was a happy hour set in a disco. I have no idea what he was doing playing there, but I went. He was hilarious. It was like Show and Tell. He sang his songs, and pulled out pictures of the people in the songs and passed them around the room, and I''d never seen anything like it.
We spent the next few years as runnin'' buddies, playin'' music most every night and every day. I think I got to see just about all the facets of Blaze. He never got the fame he wanted so badly, and I think that gnawed away at him pretty hard.
When I came home one night and heard the call on my phone machine from Lucinda, saying she had something she needed to tell me, and that she''d call me in the morning, I put the phone down and started crying. I knew it was Blaze. I didn''t know what had happened but I knew it was Blaze. I''d been expecting that call for a long time.
Hearing all these songs these days brings back all the feelings, good and bad, from all those times. But mostly, I hear the beautiful gentle words that could not have been more heartfelt, and that amazing deep voice. Music like that is mighty hard to come by, and I''ve got those songs in my heart forever.
