What do girls wish for their 16th birthday, a new dress, a new car, a Sweet 16 Party with all their friends at a fancy place? All of the above and a myriad of other things we can all imagine if we have girls or friends who do. Loryn Taggart, of Calgary Alberta wanted one thing and one thing only; to go to Canadian Music Week in Toronto last March. She got her wish. This young and determined singer songwriter knew that if she could just get herself to where the Canadian music scene was happening, surely there would be some way to get her career jump-started. She was right. In the course of an afternoon she met Cathy Young, Juno Award Winner for Best New Artist in 1974, who introduced her to promoter John Brower, who practically single-handedly started the concert scene in Toronto in the late 60''s early 70''s, (The Rockpile Club, John & Yoko Lennon''s one-off appearance in Toronto and concerts and rock festivals too numerous to mention) and who also discovered and launched the career of Canadian songstress Jane Child in 1988, (Number 1 with a bullet on Billboard for "Don''t Wanna Fall In Love). Brower heard Loryn''s demo, saw her showcase at The Drake Hotel, where she kept a room a room of 300 partygoers silent during her five song set, and immediately took her into the studio with Producer Paul Saunders where she played Powerless for the first time for anyone. This is the song you now get to hear for the first time anywhere. Satisfied that the song was timeless and the first take a keeper, Brower and Saunders headed to Los Angeles where they quickly brought on board legendary music video director Mark Racco, (Nirvana, Jane''s Addiction, Guns & Roses, Limp Biscuit). Mark wrote and directed the video for the song in an afternoon and shot it on a day when the Pacific Ocean was roaring after a storm in Peru. Yes, he watches the surf reports. Shot on the beach in Malibu it takes the naked and haunting melody and vocal by Loryn and sets it against the power of the ocean; the result, amazing.
Loryn is back in school in Calgary. No ordinary 16 year old, her musical mission is to reach out to fellow teens with songs of hope and love for themselves and the times they live in and to introduce her own musical style to her generation.
