Blue Rose Records Press Release:

The best American rock has taken its cue from the folk, blues and country traditions that have spawned it. The masters have also drawn color from the multicultural sounds that have washed ashore with each immigrant wave. Capturing all this and fusing it with a sense of what''s hot in music now is the challenge. Taming the beast and making it his own is the art of performing songwriter, Joseph Parsons, whose music embodies the spirit of the melting pot.

While many decry the lack of artist development in the corporate charged world of contemporary music, Parsons has steadfastly followed his own muse and found his audience outside the mainstream. His, has been a striking musical journey from the independently-released U.S. album, "Lies..." (1995 Woof Records) to the European debut of "5am" on Blue Rose Records in 1998. The next installment is the untitled album released to an unwitting world on Blue Rose Records, August 30, 1999. It is nothing less than a manifesto!

If Hip-Hop is the language of contemporary world culture and Lauryn Hill''s "Miseducation..." album is its crowning moment, then Parsons'' latest album is the songwriter''s response. Although lyrically rooted in the 1970s singer-songwriter poetic style, he ups the ante by laying his emotions bare in stark, honest communication. One of the album''s cuts, ''Late Last Night'', could be the plot of the next Jim Jarmusch movie. The sultry arrangement oozes with the heat and sweat of the American South.

The color and texture that keeps listeners returning is revealed in Parsons'' melodies, his rich voice and his inspired, eclectic arrangements. The album''s opener, ''Face'', takes its cue from the rhythmic sounds of British bands such as Massive Attack. But comparisons such as this are an injustice. Parsons casts a wider net through the depths of musical possibilities. ''Over You'' employs a trippy reggae-influenced beat that resurfaces on the Sam Phillips song, ''Black Sky''. Pop music''s current fascination with the millennium is trivialized by this stark and haunting vision of pending apocalypse. On the other hand, ''Boy Next Door'', channels Buddy Holly for the 21st Century and clocks in at 2 minutes and 33 seconds. Classic.

Parsons draws upon his voice to enrich the musical tapestry, as evidenced, for example, in the Arabian lilt of the vocal line in ''Face''. His world travels and rich life experiences influence his musical output. Hard to categorize, he has been compared to people as diverse as Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, Page and Plant (ex Led Zeppelin), XTC, Live, Massive Attack, Morcheeba and Neil Finn (ex Crowded House)!

Multi-instrumentalist, Scott Bricklin, returns as co-producer on this project. Bricklin is a member of the modern rock outfit, Martin''s Dam (Hybrid/Sire Records). He is joined by Ian Cross, who has five gold records to his name, and is best known for his work with rock acts such as Dishwalla, Cibo Matto and Urge Overkill. Chuck Treece (G. Love, The Goats) on drums and Michael Mennies, on keyboards, round out the musicians on most tracks.

The album closes with the moody ''Blood to Indigo''. Parsons pleads: "I want to know, what it is that gives you bliss." It is the pinnacle of a musical journey that twists and turns and permeates the soul.
