QUADRANGULAR OSCILLATIONS
© 1999 - 2005 by Rob Astor
All tracks composed, arranged, performed, recorded, and produced by Rob Astor.

A Thought Inside A Dream
The title almost says it all. It''s small, fleeting, worth grasping and remembering. However, echoing at the fringes of the conscious mind, it quickly fades, like a thought inside a dream.

Window
Take a glance for a moment at your life. Was there ever a time when you wished you had taken a chance, done something differently? I wrote this with that reflective sense, as if those chances and desires existed just beyond my reach, like looking at life through the window of possibilities.

Quiet Lake (Island Universe Mix)
With this piece, you might find yourself at midnight, laying on your back on a beach next to a calm, peaceful, sleepy lake. Do you hear the crickets and frogs, feel the soft night breeze gust across your skin? While you relax there, you might find yourself gazing up at the sky in wonderment at the stars and distant nebulae. If you close your eyes for a moment and imagine it, you might find yourself drifting along with them in their endless, silent vigil.

French Folk Song (Island Universe Mix)
Much like "Quite Lake", I chose the Island Universe Mix arrangement to lend a feel of moving through space and time. Perhaps now you might find yourself dancing on the flickering aurora borealis, or turning gently between star clouds in deep space. For me, the music is timeless, transcending our everyday lives, which is why I tried to create a version that also transcended the ordinary.

Unwinding Chaos
Something experimental exists here; something hard to grasp and undefined. However, listen closely for clues. The opening and ending reflect one another, like something becoming chaotic and then reversing course to regain order. After I first recorded this track, I saw the movie "Mission To Mars". There is a scene in the movie where the spaceship is endangered. The cue music of that particular scene reminded me of this track and validated for me that my composing was more than just a hobby. I really was creating music.

Vision
A flicker of foreboding exists in this track. The flicker might be self-doubt. Maybe it''s an untaken risk. Or, perhaps, it''s a shadow passing across the sun. "Vision" is a reminder that good and bad exist hand-in-hand. You cannot have one with the other. Unpredicted events shape our lives. How we chose to deal with those changes shapes who we are. In is in this context "Vision" comes into play.

Hypnotic Melody (A Thought Inside A Dream Clean Mix)
This track exists in several recorded forms. The original version is a very long piece, which might hypnotize the listener completely. I went back and restructured the music into the two forms found in this collection. Based on the opening track, this mix takes away the added musical ornamentation, making for a truly "Hypnotic Melody".

Hypnotic Melody (A Thought Inside A Dream Remix)
This track exists in several recorded forms. The original version is a very long piece, which might hypnotize the listener completely. I went back and restructured the music into the two forms found in this collection. Based on the opening track, this mix is full of dreamy musical ornamentation, making for a truly heavenly "Hypnotic Melody".

Iron Star Vortex
Imagine for a moment you have drifted too close to a neutron star. Captured by gravity, there is no escape. Spinning wildly, the collapsed core of the star creates powerful magnetic fields, heating matter to millions of degrees as it draws debris into an accretion disk. This music captures that spinning and falling inward toward ultimate doom.

Pulse 4
"Pulse 4" is harder to categorize. This was the first thing I wrote when I got my brand new synthesizer. The music almost created itself. To me, it speaks of the pulse of life and death, of complacency and inertia. It contains a dance-like groove flanked by the constant heart monitor, keeping the pulse of all four aspects and the constant duality. This isn''t meant to be dark, although it may seem to come from shadows. The shadows themselves may have given "Pulse 4" birth; shadows of thoughts and feelings, shadows of things unrealized.

Cloud Ship March
In this piece, you might imagine yourself looking up at clouds somehow played in fast forward. Shapes seem to tumble over one another in the tapestry of the big blue sky. Like some fantastic fairy tale, you might spot a castle or a clipper ship, blowing along with the summer wind.

Message On The Cosmic Wind
In the late 1970s, NASA launched the two intrepid Voyager probes, giving mankind its first close-up view of the farthest reaches of our solar system. As they penetrate space beyond the sun''s influence, they carry messages on board intended to be greetings to any space faring civilization that might find them. "Message On The Cosmic Wind" is my little tribute piece to them. Voyager 1 & 2 fade into the peripherals of our memory, however, they will never be forgotten.

Swimming Between Galaxies
Innovatingly ethereal, imagine for a moment you''re able to escape the confines of the Milky-Way Galaxy. You''ve drifted beyond the boundaries of stars and gas clouds, penetrating the void between island universes. Here, the imagination is all we have to create something from nothingness. And, if you listen closely, you may hear the faint echo of whales and dolphins playing in the vaults of the deep. Perhaps you''re swimming between galaxies, or perhaps you''re swimming in the depths of the ocean, traveling between galaxies known to creatures of the deep.

Echoes Of Raindrops (Xack''s Theme)
A gentle spring rain coming to an end is most what this piece reminds me of. The drops fall, creating circles in puddles, making a music of their own. This is pure innocence, very clean and refreshing. Xack is a character in a novel I''m working on getting published. There are a series of dream sequences in the story, including a rain forest Xack imagines. The purity and child-like quality lends itself to both the character of Xack and to the music. Xack is very close to me. I envision this as being his linear, musical soul.

Echoes Of Raindrops (Xack''s Theme) (Shower In The Rain Extended Version)
A gentle spring rain coming to an end is most what this piece reminds me of. The drops fall, creating circles in puddles, making a music of their own. This is pure innocence, very clean and refreshing. Xack is a character in a novel I''m working on getting published. Xack is very close to me. I envision this as being his linear, musical soul. This version contains additional intro music as well as a bridge and extended outro.

Nano Factor
Peppy and robotic, "Nano Factor" is easy on the ears and dazzles the senses in all the small, pleasurable ways. The beat is irresistible. I experience nothing but joy as I play it. Get up and dance to a new kind of sound, New Age music crossing the terminator of the twenty-first century, inviting you to come in, explore a new realm, relax and feel great. You may find yourself standing in some tavern near a glittering supernova while brilliant city lights sparkle, greeting you in friendship. A dozen species may be here with you, dancing into the night. Have a drink, take in the atmosphere and share in the universal voice of music.

Venus De Milo (Instrumental)
This dance piece is the first tune I wrote that goes with a set of lyrics. It is upbeat and fun. And, I''ll let you in on a little inside joke. When you read the lyrics below, keep in mind the statue of the Venus De Milo has long since lost her arms.

Venus De Milo
Lyrics by Rob Astor

Where were you the morning she stepped out of the ocean
Riding the foam on a sea shell
Dolphins played at her side constellations sprang to life
Venus De Milo brings love''s spell

Love pure innocence
Perfect dissonance
Warm embrace
Sweetest grace
Find the arms of your Venus De Milo

Moonbeam eyes
Paint the sky
Purple and crimson
Kisses sleek
Apple sweet
Taste of cinnamon

Find the arms of your Venus De Milo
Dare to dream
Fresh spring green
Rolling hand in hand
Step upon the sand

Where were you the morning she stepped out of the ocean
Riding the foam on a sea shell
Dolphins played at her side constellations sprang to life
Venus De Milo brings love''s spell

When you go searching
Find the arms of your Venus De Milo
She''s right there at home
Find the arms of your Venus De Milo

Where were you the morning she stepped out of the ocean
Riding the foam on a sea shell
Dolphins played at her side constellations sprang to life
Venus De Milo brings love''s spell

Venus De Milo (Bump & Grind Mix) (Instrumental)
This remixed version was done in one take and was one of the most fun compositions to play, ranking with the joy of playing "Nano Factor".

* * *

Most of the tracks on QUADRANGULAR OSCILLATIONS were written in the spring of 1999 and first recorded to analogue tape. In May of 2000, I recorded them again digitally, a few of the tracks getting slightly longer than their original versions ("Nano Factor", "Echoes Of Raindrops [Xack''s Theme]") while a few others went through transformations to shorter compositions ("Pulse 4" was originally nearly ten minutes long, "Hypnotic Melody" chimed in at over nine minutes).
From 2001 to 2003, I recorded still more variations of some of these same tracks. (In total, there are three versions of "Hypnotic Melody", five versions of "Echoes Of Raindrops [Xack''s Theme]", and at least a dozen each of "French Folk Song" and "Quiet Lake".) Along the way to 2003, new music was also born.
The first true collection of music I put together was in the year 2000 and was called SECRET PLACES. Some of the tracks from that collection are on QUADRANGULAR OSCILLATIONS while others were left off this package. To create a true album of finished material, I took music from several years worth of recordings and created QUADRANGULAR OSCILLATIONS in early 2005.
At some point, I plan to finish a few more of the older tracks. In the summer of 2005, I have created a new version of "Echoes Of Raindrops (Xack''s Theme)". It seems I can never separate myself from these older musical gems. I learned then, and now while recording my new album MARSTROPOLIS, each piece of music is like creating a life force. You fall in love with it and hold it dear, like a child. I was surprised at what I can accomplish as I recorded the tracks on QUADRANGULAR OSCILLATIONS. There is still the freshness and the innocence of a newborn artist echoing through these compositions.
