How do I start this? It was a cold, cold winter’s eve. . . (LoL) Ok, realistically speaking; the beginning of this music thing started way back while I was in junior high. I’d say very close to September 1996; I can recall the date because it was shortly after Tupac had passed. I remember reading some lyrics in the liner notes of a cassette tape I bought (I don’t remember which album) and just thinking to myself; I can do that. Thus begins my journey.
I used a notebook and started jotting down random lyrics here and there during class. Yea, mom, there was a reason my grades began to take a nosedive. I was busy perfecting my craft - I would title a page the first thing that came to mind and loosely base my lyrics on the title. I then continued writing until the entire front side of the page was full. It wasn’t till after I had written a few pages that someone had taken notice. I was asked what it was that I was writing all the time; so of course I had to show it off. I’d like to watch people’s reactions to what I wrote; especially when they cracked up laughing. I remember writing my first song “Shady Lady” just talking complete trash about a relationship gone badly; it was hilarious. The seed was planted and the buzz started growing from there.
Making Progress
Lyrics eventually turned into recording when I was propositioned by one of my best friends about recording. His neighbor had a band and a little recording area set up in his garage (we all start somewhere right?). Of course, I was down for it! So, I went on to write my first song to record “My Doggs”. I always loved the “I Got 5 On It” instrumental, but could never find it. So when Diddy (Puffy, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy – or whatever the hell he went by at the time) sampled the track for “Satisfy You” I jumped on the single and pulled the instrumental to record my song to. Soon enough one song turned into many! My boi M12 and I released an album of material in high school that we put together. Sold quite a few CDS (Thanks for all the support!!) and I still have the first $5 I ever made off music framed and on my wall as I’m writing this. For the love of the art I kept at it.
I hated trying to align our schedules for getting in a recording session so I had to take drastic measures. I bought a $20 microphone, hung it from my ceiling fan and recorded directly into my mom’s old stereo (I still have the cassettes). The quality wasn’t all that great, but it got the job done. Some time later we finally got a computer in the household (they weren’t cheap back then). After talking to a few folks and getting some input I was turned on to Acid Music for editing tracks on the PC. Its been a love affair ever since. I still learn new things about the program here and there and I’ve been using it for at least 8 years now.
This Changes Everything
I released My Words in 2002. A collection of some acid loop beats and some pretty raw material. With that album came “Father Figure”, “Creep, Sneak, Crawl”, and several other memorable tracks that I remade for my Loose Ends release in 2009. After a chance event, my CD ended up in the hands of the Dogg Father, Snoop Doggy Dogg himself! I got a phone call from one of his representatives who told me he liked my album and wanted to set up a meeting, but for one reason or another the meeting never came into fruition. In lieu of the setback, I had a renewed sense of motivation and acknowledgement. He liked my ALBUM! It was enough for me to get back in the game and go even harder on the next material.
Dirty South Bound
Shortly thereafter I ended up in the fast lane Louisiana bound. My brother and I had always played around with the thought of setting up a label, so why the hell not? Back when the dirty south was on FIRE; Cash Money was on top of their game and southern hip-hop was a powerhouse, how could we miss? So I penned a bunch of material to get an album together and released New Beginnings in 2004. The album was a beast donning the tracks “Gotta Get It”, “It Takes Money”, “Ride. Dip. Roll”, “I Don’t Need Nobody”, and “I Got U”; the majority of which were re-released on Loose Ends (2009).
Over time, I ended up linking with a local label of sorts and recorded a few tracks under them. “I Wanna Fly” was one of the standout tracks I recall from that time. Bulldog was on the hook and a verse; talented dude. The same old story with groups and labels, they eventually split. Due to some shiesty business practices I decided that wasn’t the place for me. After a short stay in Louisiana I was on my way to Phoenix Arizona.
Where There''s Fire
Phoenix, home of the heat; I recorded a few songs here and there, but nothing too solid for a couple years. I maintained a quiet focus on music over the time, mainly producing beats and recording hooks. I ended up linking with my boi Coach threw a hand-off of my CD. The musical chemistry was insane from the beginning. It generally takes me a while to warm up to people, but when music came into conversation it was all over. We worked on countless collaborations and productions I cant even begin to estimate a number for. He introduced me to the rest of Phunkt House and it was gold from there. I found myself rocking shows, cutting records on a regular basis, and putting in more work than I ever have before. During that stay, I released The Moment of Truth in 2008 and also had a hand in Coach’s release Journey to Self Reflection. Music was at an all time high in my life!
Sadly, things in the PH camp came to a screeching halt. Understandably people are pulled in different directions in life and the organization became unorganized. Defeated and growing tired of groups falling apart, Coach and I decided to form Desert Reign Productions. We maintained a solid work structure over the years. The liquor would pour and the beats would flow. Hooks would practically write themselves! I like to think we have the same musical ear and hear the same melodies; it just works! Working under the moniker Common Heirs we released the Chance of Showers Mixtape as well as several other collaborative tracks. Looking to release an official debut album soon (watch for it). All while doing the group thing, I still stuck to solo material. I released Loose Ends, The Movie Music Movement, and Pen Bleed Mixtape all in 2009! It was a busy year.
Unstoppable
Changes in life sometimes work against you and my musical companion moved westward. Back on a mostly solo tip for the time being (besides the emailing beats back and forth with Coach - LoL), I still maintain a strong work ethic. Music runs in the blood. It’s been a part of who I am as a person for years and will remain a facet in my everything. I’ve been working on my most personal material to date over the last year or so. My 4th studio album, Sincerely Yours, will be headed to the front lines February 2010 featuring guest spots from Coach, Chantelle, Tranette, Kieng, and Keno. It is quite an accomplishment on the musical front. I’m extremely proud of the album. Make sure you get yourself a copy.
To my surprise I received a royalty check in the mail from ASCAP in January 2010 for a song off The Moment of Truth. A track was apparently used multiple (and by multiple I mean MULTIPLE) times for a ringback tone! Yet again, I got a second pair of royalty checks in October 2010 for a track off Loose Ends!! This situation renewed my excitement for the art. I feel more acknowledged musically now more than ever. Motivation is my middle name! Little did I know messing around in the studio would turn into something people would use on their cell phones for callers to hear. Back on a brand new mission to release a 5th studio album, I’m ready to meet that milestone. After a brief wind down and celebration for Sincerely Yours, it’s back to the grind. Are you ready?
