At the heart of The Children is the songwriting team of John Gibbens (guitar and voice) and Armorel Weston (bass and voice).
"We started playing together in the new acoustic clubs in London in the early Nineties. We made our first album, Play, in 1999. In Memory of Grace is our seventh.
In Memory of Grace (the single disc) is a selection from a set of 28 songs that we spent two years recording. The complete collection, on two CDs housed in unique handmade artwork (which, believe us, takes patience to assemble), is available through https://www.tradebit.com.
We recorded on an antique (i.e. 25-year-old) Akai MG1214, a twelve-track, half-inch tape recorder. It uses a special format of cassette that''s not available any more. We knew this was likely to be the last project we could count on it for, which was a poignant thought, since we''ve made six good albums on it already.
We proceeded with all due caution, in case the thing broke down halfway through. The songs were divided into four chapters of 7, and we''d get each chapter to the mixing stage before we moved on to the next, so the finished work has a feeling of four "sides" like a double LP.
At the heart of each track is the live performance by the trio, John, Armorel and Hayereyah, to which we added only the choicest musical ingredients, prepared by top instrumental and vocal chefs.
Picking 13 of the songs to make an album of "Gracest Hits" seemed a daunting task, but in the end they all volunteered for their front-line duty. They make a fine unit and we''re proud of them. The edition has a definite flow and symmetry of its own.
