1. ERIC GROSS (b.1926) SALLY AT THE POND OP. 309 (2009) FOR PIANO SOLO
This playful intermezzo narrates an experience of the pianist Sally Mays had when looking for her goldfish in a frozen pond during a very cold winter in England. It seems that when her fishpond was frozen over she decided to make a hole in the ice so that some air could get into the water allowing her one and only goldfish to breathe. She lost her balance and fell on and through the ice and into the very cold water. This did not please her at all as this is not a recommended activity for pianists. When Sally informed me about this mishap my first question was about the welfare of the goldfish who had disappeared without a trace. According to Sally, my first question was like the first reaction of all her friends who were more concerned about the goldfish than about her own welfare after her icy mishap. In order to be reinstated in Sally''s good books I wrote this Intermezzo for her. The descriptive music is rhythmically and harmonically somewhat disjointed, playful and at times ironic but several musical themes hold the texture together in order to form a coherent whole. E. G.

2. 3. 4. S. & 6. ANN CARR-BOYD (b. 1938) SUITE VERONESE (198S)
SUITE VERONESE was commissioned by Nicholas Parle and the work was created in collaboration with Nicholas. He demonstrated on the two manual harpsichord some of the techniques employed by composers of the Baroque period to highlight the tones and possibilities of the instrument. At this period the tone and type of harpsichord varied from country to country, with Flemish, English, German, Italian and French instruments among the most important to contribute unique sound qualities to the music created for them. The harpsichord used in this recording is a copy of a French double by Pascal Taskin of 1769 and was built by Rosemary Parle from a Hubbard kit.

VERONESE was composed after a visit to Italy, to cities including Verona, Venice, Ravenna and Florence. The movement marked Uccelli (birds) was composed in response to the mosaics in Ravenna, which depict so simply and beautifully the wonders of life, including birds and animals. The Buff stop is used in the outer sections of this movement. The last movement, prestissimo, is intended to give a "wash" of sound and involves cross-hand patterns involving the two manuals of the harpsichord - an effect not possible on the piano. This movement is interrupted by a section marked molto meno mosso, which is reminiscent of the first movement. Throughout the whole work, the two manuals are used to create contrast and depth of sound. Sections of the work reflect the Baroque era and at other times, as in the last movement, the sound is more contemporary.

In 1986 VERONESE was one of six finalist works in the International Alienor Harpsichord Composing Competition and was, in fact, one of only two works chosen this year from a country other than the United States of America. Nicholas performed this work at the finals in Washington DC. Ann dedicated Suite Veronese to Nicholas Parle and her three daughters Xanthe, Katrina and Susanna. Ann also wishes to express her thanks to Robert Allworth OAM, for agreeing to re-release this work on the JADE label. Notes by the composer, 18th August 2009.
The movements are ITALIA/UCCELLI Part One, PASTORALE/UCCELLI Part Two, and PRESTISSIMO.

18. DEREK STRAHAN (b.193S) FUGUE ON A THEME FOR THE CROSS OF ATLANTIS (1992) FOR FLUTE & PIANO
This fugue is from Atlantis for Flute and Piano, one of several works written to develop material for inclusion in a proposed cycle of four operas suggested by Plato''s account of the Rise and Fall of Atlantis. The very ancient symbol known as the Cross of Atlantis recurs in prehistoric stone circles and on sacrificial altars. It is thought to represent the plan of the City of Atlantis as described by Plato. The fugue seeks to depict scene described by Plato: that the city harbours were “full of vessels and merchants coming from all parts, who kept up a multitudinous sound of human voices and din of all sorts day and night”
Belinda Gough, Flute and Josephine Allan, Piano. Live recording Sydney Conservatorium of Music 13/11/1992. Sound Engineer Bob Scott.

19. ERIC GROSS (b.1926) PIANGO CONCERTANTE op.302/A (2008)
This is an arrangement and adaption for solo piano of the Tango Concertante opJ02/1. Sally Mays has recorded this work several times. This recording was made at 2MBS-FM 23/09/2009 Sound Engineer Kerry Joyner,
