Kate Burke and Ruth Hazleton Biography
Since they began performing together in 1998, Kate Burke (Guitar, Concertina & Vocals) and Ruth Hazleton (Guitar, Clawhammer Banjo & Vocals) have become two of Australia’s most respected and renowned traditional musicians. Their vocal harmonies, exceptional musicianship and unique interpretation of traditional song have won them national and international acclaim and popularity over the years. Their repertoire draws on the traditional music of Australia, the UK, Ireland and America – and incorporates the wisdom of folkloric history coupled with the forward thinking of contemporary song writing. Over the last ten years they’ve also collected awards, fans and a banjo, and have been described by The Australian as “Why folk music is cool again”.
The duo has released four albums since 1998, The Bee-Loud Glade (1998), A Thousand Miles or More (2002), Swapping Seasons (2004) and Summer’s Lonesome Tale (2007). A new album will be available by the end of 2011.
Awards include the ScreenSound Australia Award for Best Folk Album 2003, and the Canberra Critics’ Circle Award for best-selling album at the National Folk Festival in 2001. In 2006 they were also voted by Folk Alliance Australia members as one of the top three Best Live Acts.
After their first-ever festival appearance at the 1998 National Folk Festival, the duo received the Lis Johnston Award for Vocal Excellence. Their albums have been enthusiastically received internationally, and the duo was named as one of the 10 best-selling artists for 2002 through Japan’s major folk music distributor, Tambourine Records.
Kate & Ruth have collaborated with a number of artists over the years - in 2004 they were involved in Martyn Wyndham-Read’s Songlinks project, performing and recording alongside top folk artists from the UK and Australia, including Martin Carthy, John Kirkpatrick and the Copper Family.
They have toured the UK and Ireland numerous times and recorded with renowned musicians Andy Irvine, Nancy Kerr & James Fagan and Bruce Molsky. The duo has also performed live with the likes of James Keelaghan, Judy Small and Kristina Olsen.
Kate Burke:
Kate Burke has been singing and performing as a multi-instrumentalist for many years, and has won much acclaim as a member of Irish / Australian traditional band Trouble in the Kitchen. Kate has recorded with many artists including Judy Small and David Ross McDonald (The Waifs), and has appeared as a soloist at the Sydney Opera House for a season of Bush Babies’ Proms. Kate loves Irish tunes and has been seen in sessions playing concertina, fiddle, button accordion, guitar and bouzouki. She is also an acclaimed songwriter, and her Song for Reconciliation was nominated for a Music Oz Award in 2003. Kate has also recently composed music for an audio history of the Victorian Goldfields, in collaboration with Jan Wozistky.
Ruth Hazleton:
Ruth Hazleton has been performing in numerous touring acts for over 15 years. She has dabbled in a variety of musical genres including Appalachian old-timey, klezmer, Hungarian and Anglo-Celtic roots music. She has worked as singer, guitarist and clawhammer banjo player with numerous bands including Closet Klezmer, the Horse’s Leotard, Bill Jackson’s Acoustic Orchestra and Dev’lish Mary. Alongside studying Australian folklore, Ruth has recently been working as a collector of childrens’ folklore. Ruth is a strong and agile vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, and has been a dominant figure on the Australian festival scene for many years.
