Details:
Recording artist Jack Furlong is known for his artistry as a baritone saxophonist, composer, arranger, woodwind doubler, and educator. Portrayed as “a messenger for jazz past and jazz still to come,” Jack delights audiences with wit and mastery at gigs, and on his CD recordings, “And That Happened,” “A Jazzebration!,” and “Bunnies in Limbo.” Jack’s arrangements and compositions also reflect a broad and varied spectrum of classic and contemporary music, producing originals with a unique retro flavor in addition to incorporating programmatic music that adds a twist he describes as, “taking a jazz field trip to your childhood.”

With cool phrasing and a simple, melodic approach, Jack’s style is a hybrid of jazz influences like Gerry Mulligan, Miles Davis, Count Basie, and John Coltrane, but personalized for today’s jazz scene. An accomplished performer, Jack leads The Jack Furlong Quartet; performs in pit orchestras, often playing three to five instruments at a time; and has worked and shared the stage with many notable jazz greats, including Mulgrew Miller, Jim McNeely, Rich DeRosa, Dave Demsey, and Ken Brader.

Although music was a prominent part of his early life in Hopewell, NJ, his interest didn’t peak until later years. Picking up the violin as his first instrument in the second grade, he switched to saxophone at the age of ten when his mom rented him an alto saxophone from a local music shop. Sticking with music paid off when, at 17, he discovered his true passion: the baritone saxophone.

The beginning of his professional career coincided with the beginning of his jazz studies at Lafayette College, where he earned a B.A. in Music. Performing in the Lafayette College Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and other music ensembles, Jack honed his chops and composed for big bands and small groups. It was during this time that Jack also started to gravitate toward the programmatic music of film, television, video games, and other media.

Since graduating with a Master’s in Music in jazz composition and arranging from William Paterson University, Jack’s integration of jazz and programmatic music has matured, as evidenced by two senior recitals featuring arrangements of music from the James Bond franchise. Jack has arranged other music by “Bond” composers John Barry, David Arnold, Monty Norman, and Bill Conti, in addition to video game music composer Koji Kondo (of “Super Mario Bros.” fame).

Outside of composing, performing, and recording, Jack explores all that music has to offer by helping others reach their own musical potential. At Lafayette College, he is Assistant Director of the Jazz Ensemble, Director of the Pep Band, and Music Director of the Newman Association for Catholics on campus. Jack also gives back to the community as a baseball umpire and coach in his hometown.
