Mikhail Zemtsov first took violin lessons from his mother Ludmila Levinson at the age of 5, later studying at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Prof. G. Odinetz). He gained Soloist Diplomas with Distinction from ABRSM (Mexico-GB, B. Dinerstein), Hochschuele fuer Musik in Hamburg (Germany,M. Nichetianu) and Maastricht Conservatory (Netherlands, M. Kugel). He is a prizewinner of the First International Viola Competion (Vienna) and of the Elisa Meyer String Competion (Hamburg).
Mikhail Zemtsov has participated in numerous International Festivals – Cervantino, Camarissima (Mexico) Rosendal, Egersund (Norway) Baastad (Sweden) Luebecker Kammermusikfest, Oldenburger Promenade, Amadeus Aachen, Bodensee (Germany), Cividale del Friuli, Tuscan Sun Cortona, Settimane Musicale di Stresa (Italy) Ost-West Musikfest (Austria), Neeme Jarvi Academy (Estonia), Gaia (Zwitserland), Grachten festival, Schostakovitch festival Amsterdam, Delft, Middelburg, Peter de Grote Groningen, Storioni Eindhoven (Holland). Mikhail plays duo with the guitarist Enno Voorhorst (Duo Macondo), he is also a member of the trio with Emily Beynon (soloflutist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra ) and the harpist Godelieve Schrama.

Mikhail Zemtsov is currently playng about 60 solo and chamber music concerts a year. He is also a principal violist in The Hague Philharmonic (Residentie Orkest Den Haag, chef conductor Neeme Jarvi), a position he has held since 2001, since 2005 he is also a member of the Artistic Comitee of this orchestra. In 2010 Mikhail got teaching position at the Utrecht Conservatory and he became conductor of the Concerto Grosso Youth Chamber Orchestra of the Hellendaal Violin Institut in Rotterdam.
Irina Shiskina, piano
The Russian pianist Irina Shishkina studied at the Moscow Conservatory where she got the Soloist Diploma with Distintion. She also won the 1st prize at the Moscow Conservatory Piano Competition and she performed solo concerts in Moscow, Irkutsk and other cities of Russia. Irina has worked as a piano teacher at the Conservatory of the City of Irkutsk untill she moved to Mexico in 1990 where she got a teaching position at the Music Faculty of National University of Mexico. Irina kept beeing very active as a soloist and chamber music player, she has performed in Russia, Mexico, USA, Germany, Norway, Belgium, Holland, Spain; she also has participated in numerous International Festivals and she made several broadcast and CD recordings.

Anton Grigorevich Rubinstein was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor. As a pianist he was regarded as a rival of Franz Liszt and he ranks amongst the great keyboard virtuosos. He also founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, which, together with Moscow Conservatory founded by his brother Nikolai Rubinstein, helped establish a reputation for musical skill among the subjects of the Tsar of Russia.
Rubinstein was born to Jewish parents in Ofatinti (a village now in Republic of Moldova). Before he was 5 years old, his paternal grandfather ordered all members of the Rubinstein family to convert from Judaism to Russian Orthodoxy.“Russians call me German, Germans call me Russian, Jews call me a Christian, Christians a Jew. Coming from a family of musicians, Michael Radulescu was born as the son of a Romanian father and a German mother. After receiving his first musical education from his parents and after his first attempts at composition he continues his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music with Anton Heiller (organ) and Hans Swarovsky (conducting) and Mihail Jora (composition).
As a composer, Michael Radulescu was strongly influenced in his youth by Hindemith, later by Webern, Carl Orff, Ligeti and Olivier Messiaen as well as by the European medieval music and its spirituality. He has written sacred music, works for organ, voice and organ, choral and chamber music and orchestral works.
Michael Radulescu’s conception of music is generally defined by early and most ancient music and its direct impact on our present time. He conceives of the organ as an entity which is capable of reflecting in a visionary and lively manner the harmony and the laws underlying the universe. For him, music is primarily spiritual and religious.
The Suonata for viola solo was written as a compulsory piece for the 1st International Viola Competition in Vienna.
F. Kreisler (1875-1961) Recitativo and Scherzo Caprice for Viola Solo 5''12
Fritz Kreisler was an Austran-born violinist and composer; one of the most famous violinists of his day. He is noted for his sweet tone and expressive phrasing. Like many great violinists of his generation, he produced a characteristic sound, which was immediately recognizable as his own. Although he was a violinist of the Franco-Belgian school, his style is nonetheless reminiscent of the gemütlich (cozy) lifestyle of pre-war Vienna.
Kreisler was born in Vienna to a Jewish father and a Roman Catholic mother; he was baptised at age twelve. He studied at the Vienna Conservatory and in Paris, where his teachers included Anton Bruckner, Leo Delibes, Jacob Dont, Jules Massenet. Recitativo and Scherzo Caprice was originally written for the violin as the most of Kreisler''s pieces. However, playing it a fifth lower on viola gives the piece a new dimension of deepness and dramatism.

Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin was a Russian composer and pianist who initially developed a highly lyrical and idiosyncratic tonal language inspired by the music of Chopin. Unlike the later Roslavets and Schoenberg, Scriabin developed, via mysticism, an increasingly atonal musical language that presaged 12 tone composition and other serial music. He may be considered to be the primary figure of Russian Symbolism in music as well as the progenitor of Serialism.
Scriabin influenced composers like Olivier Messiaen, Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky, although Scriabin was reported to have disliked Prokofiev''s and Stravinsky''s music.

Scriabin was highly regarded during his lifetime and his music has resurged in popularity in the last few decades after suffering a period of decline in the middle of the 20th century. Michael Kugel is one of the greatest viola players of our time. He studied viola, composition and conducting at the Leningrad (St-Petersburg) Conservatory.
In 1975 he won 1st Prize at the International Viola Competition in Budapest. After that he became a soloist of the Moscow Philharmonic Organisation Mosconcert, violist of the Beethoven State Quartet and professor at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. From 1990 till 1996 Michael Kugel was a professor at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music and Dance.
In 1996 he settled in Belgium becoming a professor at the Ghent Conservatory (Belgium) and at the Maastricht Conservatory (Holland).
Michael Kugel has enriched the viola repertoire with many transcriptions and with his own compositions : Sonata-Poem for viola solo, Concerto for viola and orchestra, Suite in memoriam Shostakovich for viola and piano, sonatas etc. His compositions also include a piano sonata, chamber symphony and chamber music among others. He is the author of two the two books : “Viola sonata by Shostakovich and The viola Concerto by Bartók - The history of an era” and the “Masterpieces of the instrumental music”.
“Prelude Ysaye” is one of the seven “Classical Preludes”. This piece is an hommage to the great franco-belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysaye, author of the famous “6 Sonatas for Violin Solo”.

Evgeni Nikolayevitch Zemtsov (father of Mikhail Zemtsov) is a Russian composer originally from Rasskasovo, near Tambov. He graduated from the Tschaikovski Conservatory, where is studied with D. Kabalewski and A. Pirumov. He was named Composer Emeritus of Russia and became a member of the Union of Composers of the Soviet Union. He was named professor of the Gnesin Institute of Moscow. Currently he lives in Hamburg, Germany and is a member of the Deutsche Componisten Verband. Among his compositions, many of wich have been published in the former Soviet Union, are two symphonies, an oratorio, an opera, two sonatas for violin and piano, vocal and chamber music. The Melodia im alten Stil was written as a marriage present for composer''s wife Ludmila Levinson who was a viola player and teacher.

Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst was a Moravian-Jewish violinist, violist and composer. Ernst was widely seen as the outstanding violinist of his time and Paganini''s greatest successor.
In 1828, Paganini visited Vienna. Ernst heard him and became deeply impressed by his violin playing. It''s said that Ernst then played for Paganini who predicted him a brilliant career.
Ernst followed Paganini all over the world making great efforts learning his sophisticated technics He always hired hotel rooms near Paganini''s in order to hear every note of Paganini''s practicing.
When Paganini and Ernst gave concerts in Marselle the opinions were divided. It was said that Paganini had mastered the difficulties better, whereas Ernst had played with more sentiment. They both played “Moises” Variations by Paganini- this composition had Ernst learned through the wall while he was renting room next to Paganini.
“Tha Last Rose of Summer” (a serie of extremly virtuosic variations on a famous irish song) is concidered one of the most difficult violin pieces ever written which has been considered as impossible to play on viola. Michael Kugel was the first violist who made a transcription of that piece and who has performed it in public concerts. Present recording is the only currently existing recording of that piece on viola.
