Born out of personal tragedy, this dark yet beautiful, mostly acoustic EP was recorded by vocalist/guitarist Zack Goebbel before the official formation of the band, and prior to the adoption of a more aggressive, Hard Rock style.
Zachary Goebbel had spent his career playing guitar in Heavy Metal bands around South Carolina. His life consumed by drug abuse, broken relationships and the death of his parents, he began to write songs about his experiences as a coping mechanism. Performing vocals and all instrumentation himself, the acoustic-based recordings that followed were heard exclusively by family and friends, who encouraged him to release them to the public.
In late 2008, Goebbel was reading the classic novel In Search Of Lost Time by French author Marcel Proust. In the story, the narrator tastes a madeleine cake that had been dipped in tea. This simple event brought back memories and emotions of his youth in an overwhelming moment of involuntary memory. Goebbel realized that music can act in the same way; to bring back memories of the listener’s own life, and potentially help heal some of the wounds they’ve experienced. It was with this in mind that The Madeleine Haze was born. The acoustic demos were assembled and released as In Search Of Lost Time, and Ben Carter (drums) and Jeff Hockaday (bass) were brought in to complete the line-up.
