THE RETURN OF THE SON OF THE BRIDE OF THE SON OF THE TENEMENT ANGELS: a reissue

As the 80’s came grinding to a halt, with the Del-Lords in tatters, and four critically acclaimed, yet commercially underwhelming records filling out our tally sheet, it was time to maybe re-think this thing. With Manny and me the only surviving band members, we had to make some choices.

We decided that despite a good size fan base, high critical standing, and a lot of sweaty, satisfied, rock’n’rolled believers left in our wake, maybe it was time to at least put the band’s name to bed. Thus, TENEMENT ANGELS became the first “Scott Kempner” album.

I guess it was a solo album, but Manny still co-produced it, & played bass on a bunch of it. The big kick, the big difference, and an even bigger inspiration was working with The Skeletons, The Best Band In The World you don’t know. But, I knew/know. And, they were close friends of mine, and having only ever been in bands with close friends this helped make the transition to “solo” artist a lot easier.

So, it was off to their hometown, Springfield, MO, the Queen City of the Ozarks. (Although not because of the Skeletons, as they like to laughingly point out. Oh, that joke never got old, I tell ya!) And, at what was then Column One Recording, a studio built by Boxcar Willie (really!!), with Lou on the production team, and behind the board too, we made this here record.

The Skeletons were/are mind-blowingly fucking awesome. A five headed walking encyclopedia of the coolest rock’n’roll records ever made, and they could play ‘em as good themselves as you’d wanna hear ‘em, too! They not only knew every cool one-hit wonder and their big, wonderful hit, but they also knew the follow-up that no one ever heard. And they could play the shit out of that one, too. On top of that, they wrote totally ace tunes themselves. I was thrilled and honored to work with them.

Listening to TENEMENT ANGELS now, I can easily recall the Great Spirit that inhabited those sessions, the great Ozark Mountain pot, the laughs, the food, the battery of loud amps, Uncle Lou, D. Clinton (hearing Donnie through a Marshall fulfilled a long time dream of mine), Lloyd, Joe, & Kelly - just digging those guys playing my songs - and, the preposterously psychedelic predominance of neon at The Silver Saddle Motel, where I lived for the duration.

It was steak and eggs in the morning next door at George’s, (as in George Lindsey, who played Goober on The Andy Griffith Show! At first, the place had actually been called Goober’s.) for $2.99. Lunch was usually Steak’n’Shake, Mmmm Mmmmmm. (Those guys put mustard on their burgers! You ever hear of such a thing?!) Dinner was up for grabs. Chinese buffet? Take-out (they called ‘em Bring-Ins)? Delivery of something from somewhere? Go to a restaurant? In between, there was Rock’n’Roll. And lots of it! And, that’s how it went for about a month. Good work if you can get it.
