"the gods must be smiling"

this cd signifies a musical return to the original random access roots; spontaneous composition. the session recorded in just over 3 hours is completely improvised and features one of the smallest RA units to date; geoff young/guitar, rich brown/bass, br drums/perc and the newest RA recruit robie botos on keyboards. the cd also features some great saxophone work by kirk macdonald and kelly jefferson.
the impetus here was to feature the quartet in all it''s glory, but after the fact i decided to add a little saxophone and some percussion on a few tracks to give it a more diverse pallet.
the opening track 1st things first builds slowly and weaves its way into a full out funky romp that illustrates the great conversational dynamic of the quartet.
a christmas song is a no holds barred freeform exploration that features some great guitar work from geoff and some over the top saxophone by kelly; a kind of ellery eskellin meets arnett cobb type affair.
the title track the gods must be smiling is a dedication to my son max and is the ballad of the set, but after the initial statement the tune takes a few twists and turns (like any unique 1.5 year old) and ends up in a funky yet quirky place where kelly rides the crest of the groovy RA wave.
lowell''s bowel (bowl) is the suite of the set clocking in at just under 20 minutes and travels to many diverse destinations and features the entire band including some killer saxophone work from kirk macdonald. (this one is dedicated to all my students)
the epilogue is a robie botos solo recorded live at a gig we did at humber college in toronto and it was so happening that i wanted to include it in this set, so i bookended the solo with some drum wankage on either side, and presto changeo instant tune...............after all, it is my record.
all in all i believe this cd has a unique and cohesive compositional quality to it, considering that we just went in and played with absolutely no preconception of the outcome.
When it comes to improvised music i truly believe that living dangerously is the only way to go.........is there any other way?
