Special thanks to the artists who participated in the making of this album. You are brilliant people. First, to Steven Mobley, my friend since the 4th grade at Ramsey Elementary School in Monroeville PA. This is Steve''s second cd album cover design for me and his artistic vision is something beyond this world. He understands music. We spent many hours playing drums together throughout junior high and high school. Steve is a professional senior graphic designer, and there is no one with a keener imagination to interpret one''s inner most thoughts. On both album covers, he stunned me with his first submissions. In each case, he speared the idea with sharp apercus and my decision to run with it was immediate and without question. He just knows. Thank you, Steven. You are an artistic visionary. To my closest musical ally, confidant, and dear friend, Zeno Messis, I could not have believed in my own abilities without your encouragement, advice, and sage wisdom in the recording process. Zeno co-wrote and performed on two tracks for this album (''Awakenings'' and ''Flash & Flair''). When I lived in London and played with Zeno in the pop band sensation, Far Cry, we rehearsed and recorded at Zeno''s house one night. His mother, Demetra, who I remember with great fondness, was a lovely, charming woman who took pity on a starving musician and fed me the most delicious hot meal I had during my entire stay. I''ll never forget how grateful I was then and how appreciative I am today for her kindness. Bless her soul. Zeno, from Horsham England, is beyond original and his songwriting ideas are off the chart. The only way I can describe his music is as follows: He''ll come up with an idea, then build it slowly into a swirling, atmospheric discharge with orbiting sub plots moving in disparate and opposing geometrical directions and before you know it, you''ve been to Buckingham Palace and the planet Venus all in the same trip. A remarkable musician. Thank you, Z Man! On ''Samba Em Tel Aviv,'' I teamed up with the Brazilian bombshell with the golden, million dollar voice. Her name is Elisete and she is an elegant, refined, ultra femme singer living in Tel Aviv Israel. I''m a big fan and cheered her on for about two years via facebook. She is very dedicated to her art. On this particular track, the credits, for contractual reasons, read as follows: Melody of the vocals: Elisete; Melody of the instrumental: Richard D. Ruttenberg. Thank you Elisete...I want to do more recordings with you! There is a gifted young man from Rio De Janeiro named Luck Rodriguez. He is well known in Brazil. This cat has a great sense of music. I never tire of answering his many questions because he is earnest, very bright, and ambitious. Though we are from different cultures and have a language barrier, we often do not see eye to eye on music. We surely get into it at times! Nevertheless, we found common ground on a simple little song I wrote called Latina Caliente. I sent him several other songs but to my surprise he told me he could create the lyrics and sing on this one! I just couldn''t see it but trusted him, so we ran with it and he delivered a tremendous performance on the song. I''m still shocked at how good it sounds. Thanks Luck. You know, sometimes when surfing the net for new ideas and new music, you stumble on to someone who is literally from another planet artistically. This is the case with Zed Mizar of California (He''s really from a musical world far far away)...When I first encountered his music and video art, I was not even halfway through it when I realized I had to work with him. Even before the video was finished, I dispatched an urgent message to him pleading with him to collaborate on a new song with me. After a pleasant and humorous response in the affirmative, I worked all through the night to create the foundation of the title track to this cd album, Deep Space Funk! I sent it off to him and weeks went by and Zed kept me informed throughout as to his progress. You see, I never fretted once because I knew I was dealing with genius. Zed wrote the lyrics, sang, and played several instruments on the track. The resulting work puts me in mind of what might have happened if the B52''s had teamed up with Miles Davis (It''s that funky!). Zed, you are an extremely smart man and working with you is a real pleasure. Zed, I thank you! Special thanks to David Nassim, who I met in the Negev Desert in Israel 17 years ago. David gave life to my music career with his extreme generosity. He is the smartest cat I know. Very special thanks to my mother, Sandy Bennett Ruttenberg, the most gifted Pianist I ever heard. Her refinement and artistic flair is off the chart. She is also the personification of what it means to be humane. Mama, you are earth mother to all and I love you forever. To my late father Arnold, nothing thrilled me more than when we listened to music together. His taste in music and knowledge of the cats in the band shaped my musical destiny. He took me to see the Maynard Ferguson Big Band and then The Stan Kenton Orchestra as a boy and that was it for me. I knew exactly where my life had to go. Rest well, Arnie. Love you. To my grandmother, Berdie Bennett aka "Ma." A serious poet, she was also a gifted drummer and pianist. She remains the funniest woman I''ve ever known. Her QUICK WIT is legendary. If you ever met her, you never forgot her. True story... Berdie flew from Laguardia in NY to Miami one year and had to be wheeled in a chair through the airport by a Porter (Too tough to walk sometimes, ya know?)... Remember, millions of people fly in and out of there every year. One solid year later, I picked her up at Laguardia, and as I was wheeling her through the airport, the same Porter came out of nowhere, walked by and said, "How you doin'' Mrs. Bennett?" Millions of people had passed through there and yet, she was worthy of being remembered. I almost fainted from that one. Love you, Ma! To my Aunt June Shapiro (The 2d funniest woman I''ve ever known) and my late Uncle Donald (my mentor), I thank you both for taking me in when I came home from Israel and guiding me towards independence. I thrived in your home and learned to always plan for the best by your exquisite example. The two of you were so much fun to hang out with and the laughs are still a great source of happiness. I love you! To my three sisters... First a confession to big sister Carol. When we were kids, I always raided your record collection because you had the coolest music in the house! You are a soulful and serious singer and I love your new cd album. Susan, your artistic flair, comedic timing, and loving nature, are the hallmarks of a woman who truly merits being blessed with a great husband (Craig), and three amazing children (Jessica, Jared, and Joshy). And to my darling little sister Shelley, you are the coolest chick I''ve ever known. I still think you have the best ears for music in the whole family. After all, it was you who hipped me to Pat Metheny all those years ago and changed the trajectory of my musical tastes forever. Your very cool husband (Tommy) and two kids (Russell & Rachel) are so wonderfully loving and entertaining. I get such a thrill every time we talk on the phone (Almost daily!). Ya''ll be cool... Right on!
