Analogue audio mixers are used regularly as a necessity in most music and audio applications, although only as passive devices.
However, through simple feedback loops, mixers can be subverted into frenzied parametric synthesis; revealing diverse and eccentric characteristics which couldn''t be anticipated when utilising a mixer ''traditionally''.
Many sound artists have researched and experimented with the seemingly infinite range of possibilities offered by feedback systems, although the nature of the instrument means that melody, rhythm and other elements typically associated with music are difficult to encroach upon.
''Sleight of NAND'' by Richard Knight is one of (if not the) first sequence of recordings produced entirely with no-input mixers which leans towards song structure, memorable rhythms and discernable melody.
Produced with no edits, interventions or effects, Knight''s multitracking process presents analogue feedback whittled into structured and precise, yet hard-to-classify music.
Under strict control, the mixers yield a range of surprising tones, unstable rhythms and organic ambience, all sonically punctuated by the devices'' unique characters.
Other no-input mixer related projects include ‘Closed Circuit’, techno music made solely with mixing desks; ‘Partial Trust’, a performance-based collaboration with Abigail Sanders (French Horn) and an eponymous live orientated collaboration with Rodrigo Constanzo.
