Details:
“A rock-influenced folk band with aspiration and zest.” Formed in the fall of 2008, Battleshy Youths was created in Newark, Delaware by Danny Hill and Michael Natrin. They began to play cover tunes of the folk-rock persuasion, and swiftly bonded to start performing together at various Delaware open mic nights and coffee houses. Hill’s traditional training on multiple stringed instruments and Natrin’s growing song-writing skills meshed well together.

The name, Battleshy Youths, was thought up by Hill and inspired by a Wilfred Owen poem. Songs for their debut release, Grow, started to form in the summer of 2010. That fall, Hill and Natrin headed to a local studio to work out their first EP of six original songs. They came out a few months later with a finished CD and with two new members – Mitchell Ebbott on electric guitar and banjo, and Andrew Johnston on bass guitar. The Grow sessions featured local jazz musician Rob Haislip on percussion. He was too engaged in other musical endeavours to commit to gigging with the band, so Eric Wilkins was soon added as the official drummer.

Natrin’s songs were fundamentally maintained, but with a full band, they are now able to expand and develop musically into something both unexpected and sonically pleasing. Battleshy Youths is moving forward, constantly collaborating on creating new songs and unique sounds.
