Details:
The Quest is the 2nd CD released by the Brad Bietry Jazz Group. The group consists of four talented musicians in Colorado Springs, CO. They started playing together on a regular basis in January 2005. They are Geoff Torres (Saxophones), J.R. Erb (Bass), Stefan Flores, (Drums), and Brad Bietry (Piano/Keyboards). This CD contains 5 Jazz Standards, 6 Original Compositions, and a TV Theme Song. The music on this CD has a variety of styles of jazz that will appeal to a wide audience.
My Romance is a classic jazz standard that is played in a swinging straight-ahead jazz style that features some nice solos by Geoff and Brad, and some trading fours with Stefan on drums.
Secret Love is done in an exciting Brazilian Samba style that features Stefan Flores’ expertise on the drums as well as solos from Geoff, Brad, and some exciting interaction between Geoff and Stefan.
Mean To Me is sort of a humorous rendition of the popular standard that is in the style of Thelonious Monk. It starts off with Geoff and J.R. playing as a duo in the first 16 bars of the tune, then the rest of the quartet jumps in at the bridge of the tune.
Intention Power, and Brad’s Groove are original tunes written by Brad. Brad was deeply inspired after reading Dr. Wayne Dyer’s book, “The Power Of Intention”.
Brad’s Groove is in a smooth jazz style that will appeal to a lot of people.
My One And Only Love is a popular ballad that sax players love to play. It has a beautiful melody line, and nice chord changes.
The theme to the hit TV Show Sex And The City is in a latin jazz style that makes you want to go salsa dancing in a club in Miami.
Stella Goes to Heaven is a bebop melody over the chord changes to the popular standard Stella By Starlight. Jazz musicians in the 1940s and 50s like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Sonny Rollins would write bebop lines over chord changes to popular tunes of the day, and play them at fast tempos.
Jammin’ With My Friends is another original tune of Brad’s written in a smooth jazz style.
The Days of Wine And Roses composed by Henry Mancini‘s was arranged by Brad. In the 1950’s John Coltrane developed a set of substitute chords that he would use over many standard jazz tunes. They became known as “Coltrane Changes”. Brad, in the spirit of Coltrane, developed his own set of chord substitutions to The Days Of Wine and Roses that would surely make his Berklee professors smile. He calls them “Bietry Changes”.
El Mar Azul, which translates to “The Blue Sea“, was another original tune of Brad‘s. He was deeply inspired by the beautiful blue waters that surrounded Cozumel, Mexico when he worked on Cruise Ships.
The last tune of the CD, The Quest, has a beautiful melody line with a tinge of what some people would call a “worshipful” quality to it.
Brad Bietry is on a quest to perform, compose, and to educate people on the subject of jazz. It was just a couple of years ago that he discovered what his purpose was on earth. He recently started a school dedicated to that in Colorado Springs, CO called the Broadmoor Academy of Music. Now that he has found that purpose, he and his group members are on a quest to reach as many people as possible.
