IN A NUT SHELL
Everyone’s asking why? Well it’s simple, and I wanted to explain in my own words. This is how it all came about. My grandfather was in WWII and lost his leg in service to his country, my Dad is a Vietnam Veteran, and my brother-in-law served in Pakistan for the U.S. Army. I saw how my sister worried and stared at the TV. Then it happened, I saw an interview on TV that got beneath my skin and I couldn’t shake it. It was about a family and both parents were soldiers from MacDill Air Force Base. The wife was being deployed and her husband was staying home to take care of their small children. The emotions that they shared while saying good-bye inspired me to write Soldier Come Home. At this time I still owned my garden center where I had many military customers and they all touched me in different ways with the stories that they shared with me. After I started recording in Nashville, I realized that more and more soldiers weren’t coming home to their families, and those that were had lost limbs or suffered burns or been blinded from explosions. It was just getting worse. You see, I know from my own family experiences how hard it can be for these brave soldiers to get assistance when they’re stuck in the in between. That’s when I went to my manager and my producer and told them what I wanted to do. We decided to release Soldier Come Home as 3-song CD with Cardinal Records as the label. However, when I started this project I made a promise to a Chaplin on base that my very first live performance would be on the base. That performance changed my life and inspired me even more. I’ll never forget two soldiers’ husbands named Simms and Martinez, both holding their small children. The tears I fought back just to get through the song. I felt like I was singing just for them. That inspired me to do more. So, I decided to start the Give Something Back Foundation. The way that it works is for every Soldier Come Home CD sold $1.00 will go to this foundation. My goal is to raise one million dollars by July 2007. I want to raise money for these heroes who have given so much for us, and let them know they’re not alone or forgotten.
