TONY GOODACRE If you pay a visit to Tony’s website https://www.tradebit.com you will soon discover that Tony has recorded nearly 30 albums, 25 of which are still available to buy as CD albums, but before now, not as digital downloads.
It was only in 2010 that he was able to design and put on line his brand new website, which included many audio and video clips. Then in November, he uploaded a brand new compilation album ‘THE COUNTRY SIDE OF BRITAIN’ on to the https://www.tradebit.com website, making the whole album (or the 12 tracks individually) available as digital downloads.
Included on that album, sung by Tony, are five Geoff Ashford compositions, ‘Top of the List’, ‘A Woman’s Touch’, ‘How Many Lovers?’, ‘No Such Place As Heaven’ and ‘Rags to Riches’.
The positive feedback about Geoff’s songs has resulted in the digital release of this new compilation album, featuring 15 more of his songs, available as downloads on cdbaby.
Geoff also appeared as part of Tony’s duo, trio and band, playing bass and singing harmony. The picture on the front inlay, taken on the balcony of the ‘Theehuis’ at the Floralia Festival in Oosterhout, Holland, one of Tony’s 16 annual appearances at this, one of Europe’s top country music festivals, attracting daily attendances of over 10,000 people.
Other top venues at which Tony has appeared during his 52 year career in country music include the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, The Wheeling Jamboree in West Virginia, The Tamworth Festival in Australia, The Empire Pool and The London Palladium in the U.K. and many more leading events and festivals throughout Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand.
GEOFF ASHFORD was always interested in music from an early age, playing cornet in the school band. After leaving school, his first band consisted of school friends playing pubs and clubs in the Leeds area. Next came a group called The Fairy Tales, and they travelled to Germany to work the Star Palace Circuit. Next, he joined the resident band at the Golden Palms in Blackburn called the Alan Paul Set. They had a recording contract with Decca, and released one of Geoff’s own compositions ‘Wish a Little Love’ produced by Jack Baverstock. The next contract was with Warner Brothers, and another of his compositions ‘Charmer’ produced by Irving Martin was released as a single and became an airplay hit. He was also signed to ATV Music as a writer under the direction of Tony Hiller, who made regular trips to Nashville pitching UK written songs. Unknown to Geoff at the time, one of his songs ‘Sweet Old Fashioned Love’ became a No. 1 Country hit for the Kendalls in America. It was many years later when Geoff received a royalty cheque for a UK release of the song on a compilation album called ’20 No 1 Nashville Hits that he discovered that the Kendalls had changed one word in the title to ‘Sweet Desire Old Fashioned Love’ which meant that Geoff had not got any credit or royalties for the American release. Apart from adding this one word, it was otherwise exactly the same song, and even Geoff’s own guitar lick had been copied on the Kendall’s version. By the time Tony Hiller investigated the matter, the American publishing company involved no longer existed, so Geoff had to wait a bit longer for recognition as a top country music songwriter. Another of Geoff’s songs, ‘Buddy Sang Peggy Sue’, released on Warner Brother label and produced by Irving Martin was also a big success. Irving kept in touch with Geoff over the years, and the theme music he wrote for a children’s TV cartoon programme ‘The Legend of White Fang’ became a huge royalty earner for Geoff, thanks to daily showings on both German and Canadian television.
It was Tony’s record producer Bill Clarke who introduced Geoff’s songwriting talents to Tony in 1984. From the first batch of songs he received, Tony selected the song ‘Rags to Riches’ to enter into the prestigious ‘Isle of Wight International Song Writing Contest’. From over 1,000 entries, Geoff’s song won first prize as ‘Best Country Song’, and nearly all the country songs written by Geoff since then have been published by Tony’s music publishing company Sylvantone Music. International chart success (based on airplay and unfortunately not sales) has also been enjoyed by ‘Top of the List’ and ‘No Such Place as Heaven’. Tony picked all three of these songs to include on his album ‘The Country side of Britain, released in December 2010.
Now enjoy 15 more of Geoff’s great compositions, highlighting Geoff’s versatility as a writer. Many styles of country are included, with a touch of Gospel, Cajun, Easy Listening, Novelty, Irish, even Hawaiian – enjoy them all.
