A wondrous and moving hour-long musical journey into the mystery, beauty and magic of the four seasons. Mark Edward Lewis, award winning composer and performer, plays his passionate stylings on the piano.

"It feels like playing the piano was my first language. Long before I could really express myself powerfully with verbs, nouns or adjectives, I had visions of musical landscapes. Even as a child, hitting the lowest note on the piano with the sustain pedal depressed filled me with creative wonder and the realm of the infinite. With the piano as my only real tool to express these visions, for fifteen years I worked at putting forth my feelings at the keys of pianos. After learning the arts of composition, orchestration, arrangement and counterpoint, I discovered the ease that my visions could come forth at the keyboard. How exciting it was to have what only existed in my heart and mind birthed into the world. The trouble was, although I heard an entire orchestration any time I played, no one else did. Fortunately, my musical formative years coincided with the technologically formative years of the home MIDI studio. For twenty more years I worked diligently using digital tools attempting to recreate the orchestration that played in my head every time I played the piano. As I began applying my compositional knowledge to music for film, I learned more and more efficient and powerful ways to bring my internal vision to life. Naturally, a “live” orchestra would have done famously, but not having the Berlin Philharmonic at my beck and call, I continued to focus on creating and experimenting with digital sound canvases.

And, so, for twenty years or so, friends and family have been pursuing me to complete a “piano” album. I made an attempt in early 1999. My vision was to create a music masterpiece of pianistic virtuosity. Something not unlike David Foster’s “Symphony Sessions.” But, something didn’t resonate. It was never completed, although one of those pieces exists resurrected in this project. So it would be 11 years before inspiration struck again. The quiet place: nature, has turned out to be the perfect place from which my passion, vision. My ever-present internal orchestral accompaniment (and sometimes menace) finally has found true expression. With the advent of super-powerful home computers and modern software, I have the pleasure of being able to construct a digital full orchestra to play along with my pianistic performances. I can “accompany myself” with an orchestra. And just like the little boy who found the infinite in listening to the overtones of the lowest notes of the piano, the infinite is now possible in the world of digital orchestration and composition.

And so it seemed fitting that creation and its seasons be the backdrop for the foreground strokes that this music would illuminate: the ease of Summer, the frivolity of Spring, the busyness and passion of Autumn, and the wonder and magic of Winter. They are the perfect practical inspiration for this project, which has come to espouse the emotional translation of my view of these seasons.

My hope is that this album project lifts you to new heights of emotional peace, joy, adventure, and creative vision from the doldrums of life’s issues that seem to continue recurring. I hope and pray that some of the warmth, passion and glow that I feel when I sit at the piano can be felt by you as you listen to the first incarnation of what I hear when I play.
