Details:
Leejay is a songwriter, artist, and depression survivor who writes songs to stave off the demons, try to get at some truth, offer some measure of comfort to his brethren, and avoid real work. A boy from the sticks outside of Springsteen country, he writes, “By the time I die I hope to have a code to live by.” The irony of that statement does not escape him. In Dust Bowl Soul, Leejay’s followup to 2009’s Switchtracks, the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl are metaphors for inner Hell and Purgatory; personal demons do battle with saving angels of the female persuasion; and redemption and Heaven might well be reached—or at least sighted. The trajectory is upward, in fits and starts, and optimism wins out.
