Details:
It all started in October 2009. I came home from Jazz Band, where I had thought of an interesting lick during II-V-I chord practice. I was a high school sophomore at the time. I wrote it down, and thought of something else that would complement it, and added that too. Soon, I had something that resembled a full jazz song. After revision and “smoothening” it out, I added harmony and chords. This song is now “Night Rain,” the opening song on Two Hours [LIVE]. About a month after I completed this song, I thought, “Hey, why not try to make a CD?” So began the process again, composing more songs. About three songs in, I realized that whenever I deliberately tried to pen down a tune, it didn’t sound that great; none of the three new songs that I had extorted out had the panache or charm of “Night Rain,” which had come to me subconsciously. I shelved these new songs, and decided to let the music come to me and not push myself to the music. And it worked. Over the course of 2010, I “heard” interesting bits and pieces of jazz at the least expected times: when I was dreaming in the middle of the night, when I was playing other songs on my saxophone, and when I was sitting in a plane, to name a few instances. In fact, the vast majority of “Serenata,” the third song on Two Hours [LIVE], came to me as I was exhausted in math class due to jetlag from a recent trip! Talk about the power of dreams! With this, my songs were turning out to be great, so I became more serious about releasing a CD, when it struck me that I could further a cause, Multiple Sclerosis Research, that was very close to me (my mother has MS) by selling these CDs; it would be mutually beneficial, as I would be able to see myself do something monumental, both in my personal life, and for others. So, throughout 2010, many songs came to me, but I finally settled on the very best songs for my CD. Then I went through each song and paid extremely close attention to its subtleties, ensuring that each was the best it could be.
Then, I collaborated and arranged a “combo” band (a small jazz band comprised of a rhythm section and two wind instruments) to play these songs and fixed a recording date and location. The recording went extremely well and was thoroughly enjoyable for all involved. In fact, the reason that the album is named “Two Hours [LIVE]” is because all eight songs on it were recorded in the studio within two hours, which is a very short amount of time for a studio recording, achieved only by the likes of trumpeter Miles Davis and saxophonist John Coltrane. Then, I spent a few hours going to the studio everyday for the next week to have the mastering done, making sure that everything was how I wanted it to sound. After this, I spent time on getting a great photo for my album cover (the cover photo was taken by my father at Cherry Creek State Park in Colorado) and getting graphic design done for the album. All proceeds from this album will go towards research and treatment for multiple sclerosis. Dedicated to my mother, who suffers from MS.
