MP3 Fred Hess Big Band - Into the Open

My music is described as Acoustic Post-Bop, but is "informed" by all the jazz styles that preceded it. "Into The Open" is about continuing this rich musical legacy from the vantage point of looking back and thinking forward

Details:
Hold On (Dazzle Records 202) represents my love of the traditional big band ensemble, beginning in the 1950s with the Bill Holman and Gerry Mulligan charts that I listened to growing up as a teenager. The CD also included musical allusions and excerpts from other composers who influenced me - Gary McFarland, Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer, Rob McConnell, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and even Anthony Braxton, with his forays into the standard jazz ensemble instrumentation.
Into The Open is about continuing this rich musical legacy from the vantage point of looking back and thinking forward. Jazz and classical music has walked a path that now includes the past and the future as one continuum. This is the exciting ground where we contemporary composers can make our stand. The eight compositions included here have varied musical languages from modal to atonal to freely improvised, but all adhere to the standard big band instrumentation and all have the jazz tradition as their basis.
My tribute to John Coltrane’s music, Ninth House, references many snippets of his recorded legacy while using his one 12-tone melody, Miles Mode, as a unifying element. Sooz Blooz, a twelve-bar blues has expanded written passages interwoven into the regular blues choruses. The one arrangement, See You (Illuma Soma), combines two songs about parting into a single entity. Journey To Sentosa‘s classical “set” configuration is the basis of its harmonic underpinnings and Alison’s Dream gets its vertical voicings from a single source. Saxophonist Bob Berg’s music is the source for Norman’s Gold and the continuing Clefs saga, Baby Clefs Birthday, is composed as a cartoon storyboard.
These are the varied inspirations for this CD, that truly moves Into The Open. What a great era to be living as a musician – so much available to appreciate and admire. I want to thank the musicians in the Fred Hess Big Band. They played this music with true gusto and inspiration. To have such excellent soloists is a gift any composer would envy.
