He says, “ask the LITTLE DRUMMER BOY”
This is TARAH’S 1st CHRISTMAS
“Cut out all that noise!”
The kids are trying to get some sleep
Grandma says “AYE, YOH!”
What does that mean?
I still don’t really know
But then a sudden silence. . .

At least not to me
She had a CHOCOLATE SUITE dream
Tarah did that night
She dreamed that she was dancing
A ballet to Daddy’s “Sugar Theme”
She heard him play the piano
As she danced across the keys
Just like Daddy’s fingers did
In a place called New Jazz City
But this song sounded different
It reminded her of Bach
Then sort-of-like Tchaikovsky--
Nutcracker, jazz, soft rock
His-STORY has unfolded

Tarah’s very first Christmas’ finally, really here!
The Madison Square Boys & Girls Club Singers are heard on F-R-O-S-T-Y and HEY, RUDOLPH! Ms. Deryl Edmead-Guzman directs these lovely voices. She dedicated her life to improving the lives of inner- city kids. Similarly, my adult life has been spent working with youth. Deryl and I made it a tradition to take groups of youth to the Plaza or Regency Hotels in Manhattan to perform annually at the very lavish Christmas Tree Ball. TARAH’S 1st CHRISTMAS is a ballet piece written in the spirit of Peter I. Tchaikowsky with a little touch of Igor Stravinsky’s influence. His-Story is a departure for me as a composer, infused with the holiday spirit and joyous fun of the season.
The exclamation, AYE,YOH is something my grandmother often used to express an array of different reactions to whatever situation. In the poem, she is responding to all the excitement of kids’ activity going on. Then finally, they fall asleep and the adults sit by the now peaceful fireside (Yes, some homes in the Hood have fireplaces).
WOULDN’T FEEL LIKE CHRISTMAS contains the lyric phrase-- “by the crackling fire.” Cris Sebastian Romano creates a wishful mood with his very personal, bittersweet vocal rendition of this song I co-wrote with Joyce Stovall.
WHAT THE HEART NEEDS, written for my sister to hear while delivering her first child, Nya, also appears in a different version on Bobbi Humphrey’s CITY BEAT album. On that version, Noel Pointer plays electric violin.
In addition to being a composer, pianist, educator, author and proud father, I am the executive/artistic director of Bronx Renaissance Community Theater--a nonprofit agency formed to offer arts opportunities, particularly to inner-city youth. One of the pieces in our repertoire that we frequently recycle is CHOCOLATE FEVER, a musical play written by our staging director, Frank Copeland, adapted from the very popular children’s book. CHOCOLATE SUITE is a medley of dances from the play. Tarah loves to dance!
On this CD’s finale, Tarah sings on Christmas morning. Kids of various ages sing along with her in this hopeful plea: BUILD THE WORLD FOR CHILDREN also appears on “Songs for Singers”, the third in our series of releases on CD Baby. I can’t help myself.
