Details:
In 1907 Warren M. Angell was born in Brooklyn, New York, sharing his birthday with the statehood entrance of Oklahoma, the cradle of his legacy as an educator. In 1936, after heading the piano department at Murray State Teacher''s College, Murray, Kentucky, he moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma, where over a 37-year career as Dean of Fine Arts at Oklahoma Baptist University he established one of the country''s premier fine arts colleges. Affectionately but respectfully, he was called simply "Dean" throughout his life by the legion of former students and friends.

Warren Angell came by his skills both naturally and honestly, hailing from a family of musicians, with whom homespun "jam sessions" were a regular occurrence, and earning degrees in music from Columbia University (Ph.D.) and Syracuse University (B.A., M.M.), bolstered by European studies as well. Concert venues spanned the same two continents. Also an accomplished vocalist, for two years he sang top tenor for the renowned Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians.

In 1974, the always-active educator missed not a step as he charged into a busy post-retirement life of arranging, composing, piano recordings and concertizing. His recordings spotlight an impressive command of technique as well as a lyrical playing style that can paint a musical phrase as breathtaking as lavender on lilies. Possessor of a keen intellect matched by unvarying discipline, Dr. Angell committed his piano arrangements and compositions to memory, from which this and all of his recordings were played.

His many creative activities continued almost uninterrupted until the last few years of his long and rich life, which came to its earthly end in May, 2006, at the age of 99. Though highly and frequently honored, and member of numerous academic associations, he was perhaps proudest of his 2005 induction into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame. There it was that at the age of 98 he revealed to all one secret to his astonishingly vibrant life, saying, "I''m just a kid having fun!" Indeed he did, at the keyboard and far, far beyond.
