The Composer

William Penn Montgomery graduated from California State University, Hayward with honors in 1992, where he received a Master of Arts degree in Music Composition. There he studied composition with Dr. Glenn Glasow and Dr. Frank La Rocca and piano with Dr. Donald King and Ellen Wassermann. Mr Montgomery also studied jazz privately with Art Lande and Richard Hindman, and post graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music with Bill Dobbins. Mr Montgomery lived in Japan for many years where he befriended Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu and taught at the prestigious Kunitachi College of Music. He currently resides in Seattle where he teaches privately and is on the board of the Seattle Music Teachers Association. Mr Montgomery also still spends time in Kobe, Japan, where he resides part of the year.

The Musicians

Geisa Dutra (piano)

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Geísa Dutra started her musical studies at age 4 with her mother, Isabel Dutra. After training with Heitor Alimonda at the University of Rio de Janeiro School of Music, she continued her studies in Canada and the United States, and as a student of Bèla Siki, received her Master of Music degree from the University of Washington. Her prizes and awards include the 1983 "Johannesen International School of the Arts Award" in Canada and first prizes in the 1984 "Northshore Musicians Club Competition" in Chicago, the 1986 "Ladies Musical Club Competition" in Seattle, and the 1985 "Cliburn International Piano Institute Award" in Fort Worth. Miss Dutra currently lives in Seattle and performs throughout North and South America and Europe, including recitals on National Public Radio and Television. Her other recordings include Brazilian & Spanish Piano Works, Chopin Preludes, and El Ultimo Tango (Six Tangos by Astor Piazolla).

The Emerald String Quartet

Bruce Bailey, cellist, has been a member of the Seattle Symphony since 1962.
An avid chamber music player, he performs regularly throughout the region as a member of the Emerald String Quartet. He has been presented on many SSO chamber music concerts and schools programs. For many years he was principal cellist at the Peter Britt Festival, and is currently principal cellist of the Northwest Mahler Festival. He holds degrees in mathematics from Whitman College and the University of Washington.

Mariel Bailey has been a member of the first violin section of the Seattle Symphony since 1978. She has appeared often as soloist on the SSO''s Basically Baroque series and has recorded as soloist on the Symphony''s Morton Gould CD. She also performs and records with the Seattle Violin Virtuosi, and has recorded for numerous film scores. She holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from Lewis and Clark College, and a Master of Music degree from Yale University.

Sue Jane Bryant, violist, was born in New York and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She studied violin with William Whitson, Kenneth Goldsmith and Glenn Dicterow. Further studies in Los Angeles with Manuel Compinsky began her interest in viola. Sue Jane has played professionally in the Edmonton
Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic and the Malaysian Philharmonic. She teaches and is a free-lance musician in the Seattle area.

Dajana Akrapovic, violist, was born in Zenica, Bosnia, and graduated from the
Sarajevo University Music Academy. She has appeared in numerous solo, chamberand orchestral performances in Bosnia, where she was Concertmaster for the Zenica Municipal Orchestra and violist for the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra. She now resides in Seattle where she teaches privately and is a freelance musician.

Symphony Chorale SATB

Barbara Scheel has been a member of the Seattle Symphony Chorale since 1997 and has served as soprano section leader of the Chorale since 2000. She is active on the Chorale Council and serves on the Chorale’s Long Range Planning Committee. Ms. Scheel attended Northwestern University where she studied music and earned a B. S. in education. A National Board Certified teacher with a master''s degree, Ms. Scheel teaches in the Northshore School District near Seattle. Barbara studies voice with Valerie Yockey and is the soprano section leader and soloist at Seattle First Presbyterian Church. She has done solo work with the Savannah (GA) Symphony, the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Seattle Symphony.

Paula Cullinane began her choral training with Virginia Fluke Gabelein and Roger Gabelein. She studied voice at South Seattle Community College with Paula Herd and Dr. Jane Harty, more recently with Steven Wall, and currently with Mary Schroeder. Ms. Cullinane has been a member of the Seattle Symphony Chorale since 2000 and has served as alto section leader of the Chorale since 2001.

Kevin Kralman graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 2000 with a bachelor''s degree in Economics and minor in Music, has been a highly active choral musician and soloist, having studied voice with Joyce Berger, Tom Goleeke, and Marianne Weltmann. Currently, Mr. Kralman performs with the choral ensemble Seattle Pro Musica as well as with the Seattle Symphony Chorale where he has served as tenor section leader since 2001.

John Atcheson has been a member of the Seattle Symphony Chorale since 1998, and has served as bass section leader of the Chorale since 1999. He holds an A.B. in both music and economics from Brown University, where he was awarded the Walter Nelson Premium for Musical Excellence. Mr. Atcheson also holds an MBA from Stanford Business School, and was founder and CEO of MusicNet, the world''s first interactive music service. In addition to his work with the Chorale, Mr. Atcheson serves on the board of the Seattle Symphony and chairs the Symphony''s Technology Committee.
