It is rare in today’s instant gratification music industry to find a band that treats music like a mode of expression, instead of a commodity. Any voice that cries out with a message of some worth is quickly drowned out among the sea of processed, formulaic noise. Among that maelstrom however, rings the voice of NeXuM, a band that refuses to let the clamour of popular music drown them out.
The band walks a fine line, crafting technically challenging progressive rock while at the same time drawing boundaries that prevent them from spiralling off into inaccessibility. The group’s lush compositions feature carefully arranged keyboards and tight rhythms with engrossing vocal melodies and guitar lines. Comparable to modern groups like Muse and established acts like Rush, NeXuM craft songs that explore new musical territory while still retaining a sense of accessibility to draw the listener in again and again.
NeXuM upholds a strict set of ideals. They believe in musical integrity, originality, and reaching out to their audience with a meaningful message. “We want to inspire change in people,” says lead singer Colin Jennison. The band’s lyrics address concerns about the human race’s tendencies towards self-destruction, whether it be environmental exploitation or the dangers of over-consumption. They want their audience to step back and think, engage themselves in the songs and promote free thought.
This isn’t strictly soapbox stuff however, as the band has always been dedicated to providing an impressive live show. With years of combined experience playing locations as large as Toronto’s Rogers Center, along with international shows in the United States, Italy, and Mexico, the band lives to tour and have always upheld a high standard. “Our live show means everything to me,” says Jason Taylor, the lead guitar player, speaking to the quality the group presents in their live show. NeXuM combines big screen projections in sync with their songs and a non-stop set list that provides a cohesive thematic performance.
Success in the realm of progressive music can be challenging, but “there will always be a need for the kind of music that sparks emotion and stimulates the mind” says Alex Jennison, bass player. Alex provides the band with strong backing vocals that blend seamlessly with his brother’s voice.
The group’s appeal has already been proven with over 3 million views to their Youtube videos as well as placing in the top 5 among hundreds of competing bands in the GTA’s Breakout Band Challenge. NeXuM is constantly working to keep their sound fresh and evolving and encourages listeners to return the challenge by taking stock of the impact they have on the world around them.
