Hey Everyone,
Thanks for checking out the website. Since this is the bio section I’ll give you a little background on what lead me to this place in time.
I was born in Toronto ON Canada, quickly moving on to Hamilton ON Canada at the age of three. Not long after the move to Hamilton I was forced to take piano lessons. I never enjoyed them but my parents were (thankfully) relentless in making sure I kept with them. I split my time between school days filled with naps and what seemed like GIGANTIC cookies, playing piano, and baseball. After playing piano for two years I asked my parents to let me take drums. At the time it didn’t seem like a big decision but it was one that eventually changed my life. I stared drumming at seven and was soon in the school band at Bennetto Middle School. I was never 100 percent comfortable with who I was even at a young age but music made me comfortable. Music was always a large part of my home life. Even though neither of my parents are musically inclined it was always around, every holiday, car ride, and restless night was filled with a soundtrack. The earliest musical memories I have, are of Lyle Lovett, Janis Joplin, and Lowest of the Low.

As I grew up my Dad became enthralled in the Blues. Listening to nothing else. His love for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, B.B. and Albert King, was met with apprehension by me. I riled and rallied against the music that I would eventually come to love. During this time my Dad decided to take up guitar. Bringing the first one into the house, around the time I was 12. I started taking bass lessons a little while after, and my Dad used that new ability to (again thankfully) force me to play with him and his friend Clinton, in their makeshift living room “Jamband”.

I kept playing in the school bands into high school, where I split those days between basketball, volleyball, and Band practices. During the time of teen angst and rebellion I started breaking away from the music of my childhood and started creating my own tastes. Growing up in the inner city, I started to immerse my self in Hip-Hop out of necessity to start, but it eventually grew into a love for rhythm, rhyme, meter, and the use of words. It was around this time that I discovered Motown music, and Bill Withers. I can’t listen to Motown without smiling and wanting to move. There is something about it, even when it’s sad it''s happy, life affirming almost. I eventually traded in my bass for a six-string. Mostly because I was tired of all the drummer jokes and wanted to prove that melody and harmony were not beyond me. I started learning tunes off tabs on the computer and slowly but surely started getting better with time. John Mayer and Jason Mraz were the two main musical entities in my birth into guitar playing. Their influence is still pretty visible in my playing today. John Mayer was the reason why I play guitar, and Jason Mraz is the reason why I sing.

My first stage performances with a guitar were backing up a friend. Jamila Bello, (Jamila B) was probably the first person to ever hear me sing, after she asked me to show her a song we were working on. I was really nervous, and when I look back on it I’m shocked I even sing now. We would play under nineteen competitions and talent shows at school. While in high school, at Sir John A. Macdonald (SJAM) I discovered that I also had a love for writing. Although I was a lazy student I was still able to throw a few words around with a style of my own. I got a lot of encouragement from my English teachers, (Miss Hart, Mrs. Brown, Mr. Beheil, Mrs. Young and Mr. (English) Moore.). This in turn helped me try to take the two things I loved and put them together. The first song I finished was called “No one” and that’s how many people heard it.

I took everything I learned from high school, and decided that I was going to try my hand at making music a career. I was (again, thankfully) forced into going to college right after graduation, making me 17 when I started my first day in the music program at Mohawk College. I was studying as a jazz drummer, and learning all the in’s and out’s of classical and jazz music. It was a great few years, although I was never a hundred percent comfortable, or all that social. While in Mohawk I started gigging with bands around town, doing everything from jazz trios, funk-rock bands, R&B groups and even my first solo set. I learned about the scene, the clubs, the people, and tried to take in everything I could. After a few failed attempts at bands, I decided to take some of the songs I wrote and try my hand at the life of a singer/songwriter. I still played in bands, (The Philistines, and The Shout, {now, Follow The Fleet} and those bands were the ones that got me in to meet the club owners, bookers, and everyone else that has been nice enough to let me get up on stage. I’ve had bad gigs. I’ve had great gigs, and I’ve learned from both. Right now I’m glad to be able to play all over and bring my music to anyone that will listen. Music has made me who I am so I’m glad to make music and hopefully give something back. I now work as a guitar teacher to support my solo career, so I would like to thank the music teachers I had along the way. Mrs. Easterbrooke, Mr. Behr, Mr. Moore, Nelson Toewns, Kevin Dempsey, Troy Harmer, my early childhood piano teacher, and anyone who was nice enough to take some time out to show me something new. I also want to say thank you to the people that have made a difference in my life, big or small their help has put me in the place I am today, and I couldn’t be happier. I would also like to thank you for reading this, if you made it all the way through, you are a trooper. It might have been slightly self-indulgent and overly wordy, but hopefully I covered who I am. I’m sure there’s more to say, but I’ll save it for songs.

Thanks again for ears, eyes, and love.

Keep Your Heart Open,

Max Wray
