Details:
Members of band The Mandala Virus began their lives far from the Los Angeles music scene. Lead singer, JJ (Jeremy Sicotte), and guitarist, Tom DesLauriers, met through the local music scene in Vermont, where they grew up. Both Sicotte and DesLauriers moved to California after high school to pursue their dream of being musicians. The two started working together in 2008, officially forming The Mandala Virus in 2010.
For the first time, Sicotte and DesLauriers were in a band of only two members, allowing for more musical freedom. They wrote the initial songs of The Mandala Virus over the course of a year in a relaxed writing process. A process that helped the two band members discover, and develop who they are as songwriters. “This project was very free flowing, we didn''t put any restrictions on ourselves and we just wrote what we knew,” Sicotte said. Rather than planning out a song ahead of time, they approached each song with the idea of simply writing what they felt, and whatever came to them. The result was six songs of groovy, indie rock with a strong pop sense and substance.
The name for the band came to Sicotte in a dream, where he was told he had the mandala virus. Upon researching mandalas, Sicotte learned of the Buddhist monk practice of spending countless hours creating geometric shapes out of sand, and then tossing it into a river. “It is done to symbolize the impermanence of life. A great philosophy to live by,” Sicotte says. The ‘virus’ comes from Sicotte and DesLauriers’ idea of spreading awareness through their music. Sicotte, who has been in touring bands since the age of 15, says if there is one thing he has learned through all the trial and error, it is to keep reinventing yourself. “Toss out what you thought you knew into the river, and start over until you get it right.”
Sicotte says the experience of their music is going to be different for everyone. “I hope people can relate to it in some capacity. At the end of the day we are just grateful to be able to play music.”
