“Every great song needs a hook. A bicycle needs two.” Tom Hughes 2010

A great little melodic hook might hold listener for five or six seconds. In contrast, my beautiful carbon-frame Nishiki road bike was suspended by two hooks in my garage for about 15 years, largely untouched and not inspiring anyone. Until . . Six years ago, I plucked that Nishiki down off its hooks and took a long overdue ride. And like one note leading to the next, that one ride led to dozens, then hundreds more. I was soon joined by my band mates, friends and family, one bike at a time under the “Band of Cousins” banner. And before long, we found ourselves riding across the great state of Iowa together on the infamous RAGBRAI RIDE. The moans and cries of victory and agony formed a chorus of joyful noise to me.

Spring 2010 brought RAGBRAI into view again. I read a Twitter notice from an Italian cycling-shoemaker, SIDI, who make phenomenal cycling shoes. It seemed that SIDI was sponsoring a contest to see who could be capture the spirit of those remarkable shoes. My friend and now pedaling buddy Andy Kern and I headed into his home studio and after some false starts, flat notes, and laughter, we created this song: "Ode to My Shoes.” The lyrics are inspired by the odd little rituals cyclists develop when they ride their bikes either just enough or perhaps a little too much, and by their fantasies of racing in the Tour de France.

The red shoes on the cover of this single came as a result of our collaboration, compliments of SIDI. We didn’t make the shoes, but we did make the music about them. Andy and I play acoustic guitars and sing. (Andy actually did triple duty, working the drum machine too, tracking, mixing and mastering the song). Our friend Steve Sutherland, from rainy bike-rusting Seattle, holds everything together on bass.
