Embers has become the moniker for composer/musician C. T. Reinebold''s brand of downtempo words and music, which he''s been writing in domestic obscurity for decades. The tracks on Move Too Fast represent some of his newest material, which will be featured in The End of the Beginning, the final collection of a trilogy he began writing and producing 20 years ago. The first collection of 11 songs in the trilogy, Rites for the Headless Horseman, is finished. The second collection, Blind Man''s Bluff, is nearly complete.
If you had to describe Reinebold''s music and recordings, you might take equal parts of mashed pop songwriting going back to the 1960''s with a moderated modern downtempo rock vibe. If you connect Roy Orbison to Chris Isaak to Bryan Ferry, and Doors to Golden Palominos and the Cure, introduce them to Leonard Cohen and Thievery Corporation, and see who makes the first move.
On Move Too Fast you will hear distinctive beats. Brooding vocal melodies and enigmatic lyrics. Dueling Ibanez guitars, acoustic and electric. The warmth and variety of an old Yamaha PSR 300 keyboard. The functionality and intimacy of the Fender G-DEC amp. An array of percussive instruments and sound objects played by hand. Produced in a state-of-the-art studio house in northeast Phoenix, these recordings are hand-crafted within a shimmering shadow all their own. This is music that beckons with a whisper of something more beneath, if you''re willing to listen.
The music featured on the Move Too Fast EP was written at different times over the last 10 years. Pour Every River began in 2000 as Cry Every River, and with the exception of that one word change, the song''s arrangement was recorded as it was written a decade ago. Move Too Fast began in 1998 as a rhythm guitar riff under the chorus--You move too fast/vapor trails follow you/nothing every lasts/when you move too fast--and then sat in various states of disrepair for more than 10 years. Several versions were written and discarded. In 2009 Reinebold decided to write the song as a seduction--but with multiple meanings still intact--and knew he was on the right track when the vocal bridge came together in one writing session. Work is the newest piece, conceived and written in 2009 and recorded in 2010.
Single versions with vocals, the three tracks on Move Too Fast were produced between November 2009 and March 2010 at Wide Range Productions in Phoenix, Arizona. As with most of his music, Reinebold performs all instruments (vocals, guitars, keyboards, percussion, samples) heard on these tracks, with the exception of drum loops used for part of the percussion beds.
Musician/Producer D. R. Wilke has provided engineering, programming, hip tips and hot coffee on nearly every studio session since serious audio production of Reinebold''s music began in 1992. Though D. R. didn''t lend his musicianship to these three tracks, over the years he has also provided bass, keyboards, and mandolin (most of his playing can be heard on Rites for the Headless Horseman). Wilke has also co-produced all of the recordings with Reinebold.
Reinebold performs live rarely, preferring to try out new material and listen to other songwriters who convene open mic every week at Fiddler''s Dream. He was the opening act at the 2000 Fiddler''s Dream Annual Folk Festival. He''s also been known to make surprise visits at open mics elsewhere in the Phoenix, Arizona metro area, where he lives.
Reinebold''s company, Soothe the Savage Beast, houses all of Reinebold''s creative endeavors. In addition to Embers, there is an instrumental music project, Osborn Road Daredevils, which will begin releasing tracks later this year. Reinebold is also a published poet, and is working on an internet prose piece, The Mark of N. He has produced more than 50 promotional downtempo electronic/acid jazz/psychedelic world beat/trad jazz/experimental ambient cd mixes over the last 10 years as Chazz the Nightwatchman. He also works in media relations and as a radio announcer.
