This band was formed from a desire to make music that embraces the philosophy and styles of jazz and merging them with the sounds of R&B, soul, house, and break-beat/drum&bass. The Nu Standards offers much more than any typical nu-jazz album in that it gives you not just great grooves, but also excellent improvisation.
This album was produced to simulate what you would see at a live show. Recording “off-the-floor” and minimal editing helped to ensure this. That you hear is a tight band playing tunes and helping to push jazz forward in the 21st century.
Some songs were born out of happiness, such as “Blue Funk” and “Coffee & Poker”. Others out of pain, such as “The Worst Night”. “Big Baby” and “Strobe” were created to combine the love of electronic and dance music with jazz. A song like “Dirty S” is a homage to the jazz-funk acts that inspire us to do what we do. “A Bluer Blue” is a new take on the modern blues sounds of Chicago which are combined with a contemporary jazz sound. And “One More Goodbye” is one of those songs that is fun to listen to: it’s a dub-reggae trip made to just chill-out to.
