Tyler Jackson is a fresh young talent with decades of history infused into his banjo style. Fortunately for Tyler the source of that infusion is none other than Buddy Wachter. I have performed with and recorded thousands of musicians, many of them with very recognizable names, in forty years as an engineer, producer and musician and not one of them has been as consistently prodigious or committed to the pursuit of perfection as Buddy Wachter. But time marches on, and Buddy has reached that place in life where just being the greatest banjo player in history isn''t enough, and a different call beckons - the call to pass it on to a younger generation. Tyler Jackson is the fully deserving and incredibly fortunate recipient of that passage. Though Buddy has been extolling the virtues of Tyler to me for several years, it is only now through doing this recording that I have come to know this remarkable 18 year old musician - and may I add, gentleman - and witness the relationship and the artistic transference in person. I have watched Buddy the father, mentor, brother, friend,and master just as I have watched Tyler the son, protege and human sponge absorbing at a rate that is only possible by a formative and extraordinarily talented mind. Maybe the future of real music, performed on real instruments by real musicians, isn''t as dismal as my fears would portend. This CD is the first in a series of artisic infusions from a genuine living master into a pre-eminent member of the new guard. I hope hearing it means as much to the listener as recording it has meant to me.

It''s a sad fact that four-string banjo music occupies a small place in today''s popular musical genres. While the five-string banjo has evolved and grown through the immense popularity of bluegrass music, the style of banjo playing that uses a single plectrum (pick) to coax music out of four strings has diminished through the years.
Almost a century ago, during the ragtime and jazz eras, four-string tenor and plectrum banjos were the standard rhythm instruments of the day. At the height of their popularity, virtuoso aritists such as Harry Reser and Eddie Peabody achieved wide acclaim on recordings, radio, and the vaudeville stage. While the five-string banjo has evolved and grown through the popularity of bluegrass music, interest in the four-string banjo has diminished through the years.
Despite the genre''s faded popularity, four-string virtuosity still exists in today''s banjo world. In that regard, this compact disc is very special, because it features the phenomenal ability of Mr. Tyler Jackson - a bright rising star in the four-string banjo firmament. In today''s teenage rock-and-roll world, it is unlikely that a twelve year old from Houston, Texas might become interested in the four-string banjo banjo; and, it is slimmer still that his playing would develop so quickly. yet, at a church-sponsored ukulele class, where the banjo''s infectious ring caught Tyler''s ear, he was hooked. After a year in the Jubilee Banjo Band, under the tutelage of Buddy Griffin, Tyler''s natural talent came to the attention of Buddy Wachter, who has been his mentor ever since.
Tyler is at once a curious, fun loving quintessential all-American boy. he loves to work on banjos, collect antiques, spend his spare time working on a ''66 Dodge Charger, swim, and play golf, football, and basketball. As of this recording, he is an eighteen-year-old high school senior who plays bass in all-state orchestra. he will enter the University of North Texas jazz studies program in the fall of 2004 with a focus on string bass.
Evidence of Tyler''s extraordinary musical ability can be seen in his quick grasp of banjo technique and his sense of musicality. He studies the instrument and its history, analyzes the great players, and approaches his craft with great care. To achieve the 1920s sound, for this occasion, for example, Tyler plays with a skin-head on his Vega Vox III. He even uses nylon strings on one selection, and electric tenor guitar on another.
Providing backup, we find a world class team of seasoned veterans consisting of guitarist Richard Roeder, along with Dave Tucker on drums, and Jeff Reed on bass.
And while the spotlight shines on Tyler''s dazzling tenor banjo playing, who could imagine a better team mate than Buddy Wachter help create your first CD. With each song you''ll hear the magical relationship between Tyler and Buddy - one that exists in life as well as music. An almost telepathic rapport enables them to sail through the eclectic tune list, all the while executing beautifully blended lines, swinging riffs and improvised solos.
