Details:
The Artist TONDRAE (pronounced, "tawn-dray") - His soulful voice slinks through the thick grooves of his music - evoking memories of forefathers Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield delivering messages that wake, uplift and move the listener body, mind, and spirit. The Inspriation Ask this singer-songwriter what inspires him to his craft and he''ll answer: "To make the personal universal. To tell a meaningful story that elevates the listener beyond the reality of their situation to a higher consciousness of the world around them." The Music With songs like ''Still Searchin'', ''Dying to Live,'' and ''Reason, Season, Lifetime'',''Tondrae turns a mirror to the world by revealing his own experiences with life and love. On his path to the truth, Tondrae avoids at all costs the trite and cliche lyrical traps that many a gifted R&B singer falls into and breathes new life into todays music. This is not surprising once one discovers the many creative journeys Tondrae has embarked on in his life. History Like many great R&B singers, Tondrae began singing in church at the age of 10 in his native Baton Rouge. As a teen, inspired by hip-hop pioneers Rakim, Public Enemy and Main Source, he took to the stage as a rapper. However, during his adventures in hip-hop he had a revelation , in his words "every rapper wants to sing." Finding that singing afforded him more freedom to express ideas and emotion, he returned to his first love in an acapella group All4Love. Leaving Baton Rouge to attend Atlanta''s Clark University, Tondrae explored another creative passion; majoring in film and drama. It is no coincidence that as he developed his skills bringing his stories to life as a filmmaker, he also began applying those skills to his emergent interest in songwriting. Following college, Tondrae resumed his music career, moving to Europe to sing with a cover band. Though not enthused with singing top 40 fare, he fell in love with Europe and found London''s music scene particularly inspiring. Returning to the U.S., Tondrae made New Orleans his home and set his creative wheels in motion. Armed with keyboards and drums, he worked to develop his repertoire of original songs. He joined forces with guitarist Daniel Castillio and Roderick "Bassheavy" Tillman, then began performing with a full band in clubs throughout the city. It wasn''t long before Tondrae''s powerful, rich voice and provocative lyrics were captivating large audiences at the 2003 and 2005 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and last year at the 2004 Essence Music Festival. Tondrae also has found success in his film career. The New Orleans Film Festival awarded his work as director of the short film "Lottery Ticket" and as co-director of the mock documentary, "Patrick Thompson." The Future... Tondrae''s star is definitely on the rise. This multifaceted artist is living proof - the only limits are the ones you make.
