Tangence formed in the summer of 2003, in the wake of Tom Barito''s frustration with the banjo. Seeing that the instrument had always been associated with classic bluegrass music, and received the brunt of endless jokes, he decided the instrument had its own place in the pop music genre. Not knowing anyone crazy enough to share this idea, he decidedly thrust a guitar into his son''s hands and began to brainwash him. Adam Barito was coming to the dark side. He was accepting banjo as a pliable instrument in any genre.
As the musical ideas of Tangence began to grow, Tom and Adam realized neither had extraordinary vocal talents. Adam spent every waking moment playing his guitar and improving his voice, but they knew this wasn''t enough. Seeing as they were both goofy looking male instrumentalists, they decided to search for an attractive female with higher vocal abilities. They pleaded fellow Arkadelphian Suzanne Jansen to join in their musical plight. She agreed, seeing the endless opportunities for fame and fortune in the prosperous town they lived in.
Instantly, the group meshed. Suzanne and Adam found a distinct sound based on strong harmonies, and Tom was able to create new ideas on his banjo. As the band practiced together and played together, their fan base exploded. Arkadelphia burst into excitement.
Adam also realized that getting hurt by other people was not always a bad thing. He found solace in turning pain into songs, and the arsenal of original material for the band grew exponentially. The song material was usually loosely based on girls, headaches, or a combination of the two. When combined with beautiful harmonies, driving rhythms, and piercing banjo, the songs came to life.
Feeling the need to etch their musical moments in stone, Tangence entered the studio to record their songs, and ultimately share them with anyone who would listen. The most ecstatic member of the band was Tom. His brainchild had been realized. The banjo had made its first step, however small, into the realm of pop music.
