BEWARE THE PHILISTINES!
The Philistines defy category. Their meticulously crafted debut is chock full of taut bouncy rock grooves, ska elements, Motown break beat, and a jazz-rock mentality not unlike Steely Dan''s. Replace Donald Fagan''s vocals with front-man Andrew Thompson''s - a mix of Sting, Colin Hay, Elvis Costello, and a touch of Stevie Wonder.
Their songs range from the sitar-infused cubano ballad Scheherezade to the drum and bass carnival stomper Sabotage. Their unique brand of new wave pop is a progeny of the glory days of MTV a la XTC, Level 42, Squeeze, and Men at Work. Although the Philistines may sound nostalgic, they are no garage revivalists or retro rockers. This Brooklyn-based band nods more to Joe Jackson and the Police than to the Kinks.
The Philistines rely on tightly polished arrangements with a jazz bent. There are no gimmicks or frills. There is a sincerity and adventurousness to the Philistines that makes them not only sound fresh, but thoroughly refreshing.
