"M-i-crooked-letter-crooked letter i, crooked-letter-crooked letter i, humpback-humpback i"

--Mississippi River Nursery Rhyme

Born in the dining coach of a hurtling steamer train in the foothills of boot-heel Missouri, crooked letter i (nee Benjamin Bogue Pranger) came of age along the Mississippi and has a long history of living near rivers. Formerly of Baltimore''s acclaimed Payola Reserve, he now scours that damp stretch of concrete called the LA River, sniffing for clues, keeping appointments and delivering strange amalgams of desert folk, Appalachian soul and psychedelic Americana.

“Forever Blue” is the soundtrack to Abigail Bean’s film of the same name, a mysterious and wistful vignette set in the American Southwest of the 1950’s, a place of desolate beauty and lost innocence. Trouble ensues and the past reemerges when a trio of sultry vixens form a gang and set out to rob a roadside gas station...

"Tom Waits by way of Walt Whitman."

"Dylan Spoon-ing with Costello"

"This is social commentary through plenty of literature references and allusions, disturbing ballads and melodies that persistently infuse the air like a stick of incense burning in a 5''x5'' compartment. Pranger sings with an almost preacher-like tone, like some devious, handsome priest trying to charm his way past your common sense except with promises of dissatisfaction rather than salvation."

--Rag Magazine

"The music contained here encompasses southern blues, Appalachian folk, country, soul, pop, and good old American rock and roll. Did you get all of that?"

--Phantom Tollbooth

"Should be snatched up by a label any day now...a great intersection of past and present sounds."

--Pop Matters

"Rootsy rock with a vocalist who sounds like a sexier Elvis Costello..."

--Performing Songwriter

"Country Rock infused with a strong Pop sense and an almost R&B-ish swagger, like The Stones excursions into rootsy American forms of music."

--Cincinnati City Beat

"Mines influences from rock, pop, country and R&B and fuses them into lush concoctions of melody and noise that throw you on the ground, pin your arms back, and scream ''LISTEN TO ME!''"

--The President Wears Prada

"Could easily have been one of the guests to appear on The Last Waltz. Each song is a rich combination of excellent songwriting ability, complex melodies and solid rhythms."

"Channels AM psychedelic Americana with dynamic instrumentation."

--Butter Team

"Elvis Costello circa ''Goodbye Cruel World'' with Tom Waits singing? The alt-country Kinks of ''Muswell Hillbillies'' hinting at ''Celluloid Heroes'' to come? Neil Young Americana with Jeff Tweedy modernity?"

--The Big Takeover

"Dig It: Jeff Tweedy makes a quilt with Elvis Costello and David Bowie and has enough material left over for a Kinks pillow."

--Cincinnati City Beat

"As steeped in Americana as pecan divinity from Stuckey''s. Like Zykos covering Dylan or Josh Ritter. Indie, but not indie."

--Hybrid Magazine

"The alt-country flavor of The Flying Burrito Brothers melded with the pop sensibility of Matthew Sweet with a bit of early Bowie thrown in as well."

--Ear Candy Magazine

"a heady mix of garage sensibilities and crafted songs that is almost criminal"

--Aiding & Abetting

"Really impressive music to listen to, definitely not anything anyone else is putting out at the moment."

--Infused Zine
