Details:
Ayosgi (soldier) is dedicated to our military overseas & stateside. American Indians have served in the US Military since way before they were classified as US citizens, which did not come until after 1924. One of our Honor Songs is to Pvt. 1st Class Lori Ann Piestewa, Hopi/Hispanic. She was the first Native American woman killed in combat for the United States. She died in Iraq in April of 2003.

WWI & WWII Native American military sent coded messages in their tribal languages. Some of these Code-Talkers were Cherokee, Chippewa, Choctaw, Comanche, Hopi & Navajos. The Code-Talking worked wonderfully. There were more than 42,000 American Indians who served in the Viet Nam war. Our country did not give the Viet Nam Veterans the welcoming & respect when they came back home.

It has always been the American Indian way to show their respect to their returning warriors through ceremony. At each powwow there is a Veterans Dance in which all Veterans, men & women are asked to enter the Circle so that they may be honored for serving their country.

In Iraq & Afghanistan American Indians continue to serve in record numbers in the military. We are honored to know our music has been taken to Iraq by our Native troops. In 2004 an all Cherokee Drum called Desert Thunder sang at a powwow put on in Iraq (in combat zone). They got a 55 gallon oil can & made it into a Powwow Drum. Some Native troops were able to have family send them regalia & some were able to put together regalia with what they had on hand. It was a great morale builder! One way for us to express our gratitude is through singing in the Drum Arbor & through our CD''s. We thank you all.
