Details:
“It Stands To Reason” began as a rant after I saw a smug, sanctimonious TV preacher with the gall to claim he was doing Jesus’ work while wearing a shiny, expensive suit and begging his audience to open their wallets for the Lord. It was world-class hypocrisy, worthy of Congress and Fox News. I started thinking of the hypocrisy that surrounds us, and with, unfortunately, so much material I wrote a first draft in no time. That version was so poisonous that I toned it down during rewrites, worried about being smug and sanctimonious myself. To stay concise and not ramble, the version I recorded mentions only four examples of hypocrisy: televangelists, media celebrities, CEOs and politicians. The song clocks in at under three minutes, though, so depending on the reactions I get I might do a new recording with that fifth verse about TV news.
Finally, hypocrisy is everywhere but so are good people. Band together with them and, as “It Stands To Reason” pleads, don’t take it lying down.
