Katie was born Kathlea Richelle Harris in Alameda County, California to a US Army Infantryman and his American wife. Her middle name Richelle is a related feminine short forms based on Ricky, her father’s name. Later, when the marriage ran into difficulties, Katie’s father took an assignment overseas. When Katie was 16 she broke up with her high school boyfriend to concentrate on school, became a vegetarian (now vegan), and started making plans to attend college. Katie could not attend the university she was accepted to at 17, Schiller International University - An American University in London, so she decided to join the Air Force to receive the G.I. Bill to go to school in the United States.
When she was 18 she joined the US Air Force where she earned the National Defense Service Medal. The National Defense Service Medal was intended to be a "blanket campaign medal" awarded to any member of the United States military who served honorably during a designated time period of which a "national emergency" had been declared. Eligibility occurs for members of the United States military during qualifying periods of national emergency. Katie, though only 18 at the time the award was issued to her, was eligible as a result of the then ongoing Gulf War. Shortly after joining the Air Force, Katie became a part-time model; though the latter means of support never agreed with her so she moved on to pursue higher education.
While at college in New Orleans, Louisiana on a partial UNCF Michael Jackson Scholarship for Art, Communications, Music, Performing Arts, Theater Arts/Drama, Vocal Performance, Katie paid her dues as a music intern promoting some of music’s top House of Blues guest artists. The internship at the House of Blues allowed Katie to further develop her creative freedom and discipline. Katie had been inspired shortly before this music internship to write and record her first song and to take a beginning voice lesson class. Katie soon after this inspiration to write songs turned down a marriage proposal to concentrate on college.
Katie graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana with a BA from the schools distinguished Communications program within 3 years of beginning classes. Katie’s insatiable learning appetite was not satisfied at graduation though, so she then applied to and attended University of New Orleans graduate school and graduated from this school 2 years later with honors. Katie completed a total of 5 years of study in New Orleans during which time she continued writing songs when inspired and weighing several collaborative and independent recording options. Katie continued to let her creative impulse to write and share songs develop, and since Jazz was always a part of Katie’s peripheral music life, she made a natural progression into recording Jazz standards after futile attempts to record original contemporary songs with producers she could not synthesize with. After the acquisition of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock recordings that were initially meant simply for personal relaxation, not professional music study, Katie found her place in music expression in traditional Jazz.
Katie had a natural attraction towards Jazz standards, which encouraged her musical growth. Bird Songs/Lullaby music release developed quickly into natural order as if scientific. Bird Songs is a 7-song popular standard compilation that caters to the Jazz connoisseur while illustrating her vocal range and versatility, presence and human expression.
