Beware Euro dance music fans, and start grooving—there’s an infectious “Killer” on the loose, and Jacqueline Lord is taking no prisoners as her highly anticipated debut single hits the UK and Europe November 8.
Discovering her niche in club music after honing her craft at some of L.A.’s renowned singer/songwriter hotspots, the multi-talented performer—who originally conquered all corners of Europe as a well traveled, high fashion print model and had a featured role in the Steven Seagal film “Mercenary”--is releasing “Killer” as the first of three singles over the next year on her own label, https://www.tradebit.comb Records. Helping bring her sexy, empowering track to the dance floor is top UK remix and DJ team Soulshaker, who have worked their magic in recent years for Keri Hilson, Lindsay Lohan, Paul Harris & Steve Mac, Robin S., Alexander O’Neal and Crystal Waters. Soulshaker were also the only UK dance production crew to be commissioned to remix the double Grammy Award winning track “Disrespectful” by Chaka Khan & Mary J. Blige.
The experience of watching “Killer” hit the streets and clubs in Europe is more than just the latest professional conquest in Jacqueline’s diverse career—it’s the fulfillment of a lifelong dream and a destiny that was her true essence since early childhood. Inspired by her mother, a piano teacher and professional violinist, she began playing piano as soon as she was old enough to climb on the bench, and started writing songs at age seven. Learning to play by ear, she fooled her teachers at Chicago’s Roosevelt University’s music school for gifted children into believing she was sight-reading.
She performed in musicals in high school and, in her sole semester at the University of Illinois, sang in the concert choir and began to expand her vocal range in the classic opera “Carmen.” Looking back on the extraordinary journey that led her to this point, Jacqueline marvels at the fact that, no matter how much success she achieved in other career endeavors, nothing could keep her from pursuing her true passion She intended to pursue music when she started college, but she was soon discovered by modeling scouts who urged her to come to New York and sign with the top agency IMG.
No matter how many frequent flier miles she accrued, working everywhere from the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy and South Africa, writing songs and becoming a recording artist and performer was always her top priority. Even as she developed an extraordinarily diverse career as a model and actress, Jacqueline spent every spare moment writing songs in hotel rooms and at her residences in Los Angeles, Miami, New York and hometown of Chicago.
“The thing I loved most about modeling was the down time, because when I wasn’t out at clubs dancing, writing music on my portable keyboard was all I was doing,” Jacqueline says. “Being a songwriter and musician was always who I was at heart, but I was traveling so much that I didn’t have a formal outlet for performing. It was strange having this great career but feeling unfulfilled because I wasn’t doing what I feel I was meant to do. When I moved to L.A. to pursue acting, I was also able to commit more time to my music. It’s very rewarding seeing all of this hard work come to fruition.”
Putting some of the money she made as a model towards financing her musical career, Jacqueline made her first studio recordings while honing her performance chops at singer/songwriter friendly venues like Hotel Café, Genghis Cohen and Tangiers. While she made her first breakthrough when her track “Broken” was licensed for the 2008 independent film “Stiletto” (in which she also had a small role), she was still searching for her true voice as an artist. She began gravitating towards dance music after being chosen to appear in a music video for the song “Lonely Girl” by London-based vocal trance group OceanLab.
“That experience was exciting for me because it led me to rediscover the dance music scene for the first time since my early modeling days in New York, Milan and Miami, when I went to clubs all the time,” says Jacqueline. “The video had a real dancey vibe to it and soon afterwards I wrote ‘Killer’ and sent it to my manager David Polemeni. He loved the demo. It was unlike anything I had ever written, the most upbeat thing I had ever done, and ultimately, thanks to the Soulshaker remix, it fit perfectly in the dance genre.”
Though there’s no doubt that it’s the groove and hook (and the sexy, James Bond-like artwork) that initially seduces the listener’s many senses, Jacqueline has also written what she considers her “sexiest” lyrics ever. “Everything I wrote before as a singer/songwriter was very emotional and confessional, wearing my heart on my sleeve, but ‘Killer’ is pure fantasy. It’s a power trip about a playful sexual fantasy, pure escapism, and that’s something we need in this crazy world today. The songs I’m writing now are designed to get people to leave their problems behind.
“I’m singing ‘Do you want it on the counter or in bed?’ and about messing with your senses or your head,” she adds. “I will be your perfect sexual fantasy as long as you don’t cross me. It ties in perfectly with the gun toting hot chick character I played in the Seagal film, ‘Mercenary.’ It’s about a sexy woman who is powerful but will not give up her power easily to a man. The whole experience of writing and recording the song and then hearing the way Soulshaker brought it alive in a whole new way is so amazing. It’s more fun than anything I could ever have imagined.”
While she’s looking forward to letting loose and performing for the first time onstage not seated behind a keyboard, Jacqueline believes her talent has a greater purpose.
“Making music is not about a quest to be famous,” says Jacqueline, “but simply a way to express myself, and make emotional connections. Right now, as ‘Killer’ is about to strike, I’m excited about the same things I am anxious about. It’s actually the same physiological response. I’ve always used the piano to anchor my performances and I’m looking forward to shedding that and being center stage. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to express myself in different ways, to collaborate with other writers and producers for the first time and build my label, https://www.tradebit.comb Records, so that I can eventually help and work with other artists.
