It’s January in Melbourne, Australia and the doors to the studio are all open. You can hear birds on the album but Dave and Mike don’t care, they want you to hear the birds. Every day of January has the same structure. Wake up, go for a run, grab some guitars and a whiteboard, write a song, lunch, play at the local park, learn how to swing on the monkey bars again, play frisbee, head back to the studio and start recording the song written that morning. Two guys, two guitars, sharing one microphone. All of the songs on The Monkey Bars’ first self titled album were written and recorded in January 2009. We wanted to make an actual ‘record’ of two people playing in a room together. Armed with that initial spark, the songs were lovingly expanded and crafted – culminating in The Monkey Bars first (but definitely not last) album. Michael Miller is the award-winning singer, songwriter and producer behind Perth band Fourth Floor Collapse. Dave Smyth is an actor, musician and artist who has worked with the Sydney Theatre Company, staged solo exhibitions and performed in Perth band Tinker.
