From the Composer:
Thanks for listening to my CD of original compositions, “Heart of Jazz”. Recording and production have taken nearly four years. I do not play on these sessions although I wrote the melodies and enjoy playing them on the piano, my main venue for composing. Arranging them and planning out the soloing template, etc with the musicians, particularly Denis Brousse, the versatile pianist on these sessions, was exciting and was a privilege.
Rich Kurtz, the bassist, engineer and mixer is the most enthusiastic, yet exacting person one could ask to work with. His wonderful ear and his skill with the equipment allowed us to get the absolute most from our sessions, and he is primarily responsible for the overall project and the realization of my dream. A big "thank you" to Matt Ramer of Digilog Sound And Image for graciously mastering, remastering, burning and reburning the CD at my request.
Some Highlights and More About The Amazing Musicians:
“Ellen’s Tune" quintet (5:40) is a jazz ballad written for my daughter. It reflects a father’s love mixed with regret that sometimes a child grows up too quickly without the time to really get to know him or her. Melodic, lyrical, jaw-dropping solos on the flute and sax by Skip Spratt, which fit the mood. This is classic Skip.
“Someday I’ll Spend Some Money” (5:15) is a fun, up-tempo, lighter jazz tune. This song helps me daydream about relaxing and enjoying. It will chill you out when you''re stressed.
“Kaleidoscope and Conga” (3:28) features tenor sax and conga with a melody reflected on itself (like a kaleidoscope) and has a wonderful tenor sax solo. No specific genre but might be called “world music”. Consummate professional, Bob Farina, plays drums and percussion.
“Moonlight Jazz” (3:02) is a straight-ahead, driving, mainstream bop composition with a Beethoven introduction taken from the “Moonlight Sonata”.
“The Rain and the Wind” (5:12) written in 1978, is a ballad in a minor key with a mild Latin beat. There is interesting interplay between the piano (Denis Brousse) and the soprano sax at the end after the melody is repeated, before the song fades. Check it out!
“Corazon de Jazz” (4:19) is inspired by a long appreciation for Latin music. Once again, great solos on sax and flute by Skip Spratt. Great piano support and layered percussion.
“Ellen’s Tune" trio (4:49) is a reprise, with piano, bass and drums only. A different treatment of the same material as track one, with a completely different and moving piano solo.
Other than an electric bass on some numbers, the CD is all acoustic and totally original. (Beethoven aside!) There are no imported clips or borrowed instrumental tracks. I hope you enjoy it.
