Sevens Revenge offers a combination of cover tunes and originals on this five-song acoustic EP.
The opening original song “Statues” offers music that is soothing. Kris Caden begins with strumming on her acoustic guitar, then lead singer Dusti Seven delivers lyrics that complement the dreamy mood conveyed by the music.
“There are walls, don’t pretend they are not there/ your hopes your dreams my vision you’ll climb those stairs/ I find solace in your bridges, fear in your ground.”
Next up is a cover of “Zombie” by the Cranberries. Seven puts enough of her own style to make this 1994 tune sound fresh, while also mimicking some of the vocal stylings of Dolores O’Riordan. Seven gets across the poignancy of the subject matter, the religion-fueled violence of Northern Ireland.
The original “Lightning” begins with Caden playing an arpeggio on guitar in a minor key. Eventually it picks up the pace, with the guitar shifting to strumming chords. Keyboards add some variety and elevate the dramatic nature of the tune. Seven sings of painting a picture in her mind. “The winds blows the direction of my will/ maybe in this storm I will fill/ follow my reach, my reality breaks down/ I wonder when it will come together again.”
The band covers “32 Flavors” by Ani DiFranco and does justice to the original.
Wrapping things up is one more original, “18 Weeks.” The lyrics are about longing for a lover who is far away. “Now we look back on our lives/ and we wonder if we made it right/ things didn’t quite work out as planned/ it just had to be this way in the end.”
Cooper Stanley’s bass line adds just a touch of complexity to the melodic guitar strumming.
